Andy's Flatiron Mountain Steel Shoot

Back by popular demand, a desert shoot on the west side. Andy has agreed to haul out his steel targets for another pistol challenge.
ALL are welcome. We had a first time shooter as well as several experienced shooters. The first shoot worked out really well, so it's time for another. Just happens to be the day after Valentines Day, so we will paint little hearts on the targets for your enjoyment. And as a late reminder, 'get your honey a card BEFORE the shoot'. Much easier to get permission. Heck, bring her out with you.

Just broke the trigger reset spring on my CZ while dry firing tonight. May still come out.

Were you using SNAP-CAPS (dummy bullets) or an empty chamber?

      1 · February 15, 2014

    • BenQ

empty chamber. Unfortunately, TRSs are known to break in some CZs. While others haven't had a break in 20k rounds. Luck of the draw I guess. CZcustoms is in Mesa, so I plan to stop by this week and pick up a few spares springs and try to refrain from buying another pistol.

My wife and I enjoyed the event. We go a chance to meet others with a common interest. I truly hope we can do this again. My wife took a few picture, and they are now posted. Thank you for making my day special. Andy

I found the spot on google maps using the coordinance and made my way to Aguila road; however, I did not find you people. I stopped at mile marker 17 on Aguila road and turned back....

    February 15, 2014

    • Jim H

so close.... marker 16 is 400 yards from cattle grate which is 880 yards from where we were. We'll catch you next time.

Is my 5-shot S&W welcomed? I have speed loaders for that 6th shot...

Just in case I have thoroughly confused anyone, it is FLATIRON MOUNTAIN, not Iron Mountain...I just get lazy sometimes.

  • Ruben M.

Hey guys I clicked on "map" and google maps says it cannot find the location, so I wonder if I can meet someone along the way to follow you to the location. I reside in Surprise.

If so, shoot me an email at: [masked]

    • Jim H

Ruben, copy the gps coordinates and then open google maps and in the blank box next to the word Google, paste and hit the find button. It will bring up a map with a green arrow pointing to the cattle grate where you will turn left. the mountain will be in front of you and we are on the north side.

I see that many of you will be first timers. Be prepared to have fun. Jim will keep the group safe, it's what he does. I made the handgun targets you will be shooting at. There is something wonderful when you can see and even hear a target that has been hit. It reminds me of the old arcade shooting gallery. My wife and I will see you all there. As Jim said bring water, and a hat...

Everyone, it appears that the temperature could be 80 degrees or so. Bring water, maybe a little more water and a chair to sit on. Maybe even a little shade.
Temp will be in the 40's when we start, wear layers.

    February 14, 2014

  • Jim H

Paul, This is in the raw desert up against a mountain. If you bring a chair, there will be ample room to sit and watch. Depending on 'your' mobility, getting around in a walker is doable, but there are some rocks to contend with.

    February 14, 2014

  • Paul

A few questions. I just had my right knee replaced and have to use a walker. Also i cannot stand for any length of time. Would i be able to access the shooting area, and is there seating available?

I am super sad that I am now unable to attend, but I hope everyone has a great time and am looking forward to hearing how things went.

Ammo to bring - I would guess at a minimum 50 rounds. Now, if, you squeeze as fast as you can, well, maybe multiply x 10 !
Here's what to expect. We have 6 targets per station. We will go thru a practice run. Gives everyone a chance to get acclimated.
Then we will load 6 rounds and fire till dry. Accuracy is a must. Only 6 rounds 6 targets. Then, time permitting, we will go for speed, period. First one to knock down all 6, ends the round. This gives a chance to practice magazine changes.
Now, most important, this is for fun.
There will be novice as well as experienced shooters.
    Safe shooting is a must.

Brand new to the group (today) and this sounds like something I would love to do, but, I will have surgery on my right arm the day before. I'll definitely want to join you on the next east valley outing.

For those who have never did anything GPS numbers, in order to use them you need to first open your Internet Browser, and then open to a new page in Google’s Maps. In the place where the cursor is blinking is where you enter the set of numbers. Get the numbers from the post containing the GPS info. The easy way to enter the numbers is to select the numbers (with your cursor positioned in front of the 3, click and hold down the mouse button. Now while still pressing the button, slide to the last number, also a 3; now let go of the button. The numbers should now be highlighted. Copy the selection and paste it into the browser. Click on the question mark and the location will come up. It’s easy once you know the secrete handshake.

Will rimfire be allowed? If so, that may convince the better half to come out also.

If I'm looking at the correct photos from the last meetup your vehicles are not very far from where the firing line is. so I could very well see how ricochet has a better chance of doing damage. I usually park 20+ yards away and set up a table a few yards behind the line to put my gear on.

From our experiment, 33' was a good distance for center fire. Targets are angle cut so that there is deflection. We did have the dueling tree too close and had to move it out to the 33' mark.

To all that did not make it to the last one but considered it. FYI it was a great time. Thank you Andy for holding this again. I enjoyed the last event very much. I have interest to attend another. It works out on this one My daughter is involved in a big 3 day tournament. If it turns out she has a PM schedule I may be able to make it work out.
