Re: [van-android-developers] Android meetup: spinning up the engine (looking for your feedback)

I would suggest folding this Meetup group into the PolyglotVan Meetup group.  There are multiple people organizing over there and the workload gets shared fairly well.

We are also in the planning stages for this years Polyglot Conference and I'll be more aggressive about getting Android content there.

If you are an Android developer please start coming out to Polyglot Meetups and share stuff there.  Consider the Scala and Ruby Meetups.  There are developers out there that are shipping Android Apps without writing Java.  There is some cool stuff happening amongst those groups, too.

I've been slack, distracted, neglectful. All true. The first couple of years of this meetup had much more activity and then life happened.

Over the nearly 4 years since initiating the meetup it's grown to 600+ members which is in a way a surprise, however, given the ubiquity of high end smartphones today not that much of one.  Meanwhile in my work I'm also now very deep into mobile, both iPhone and Android games although not as a developer, compared to back when the meetup was my way of keeping in contact with mobile development as an outsider.

Today's thread goes to show just how diverse a range of members there are: to help mitigate this in future I will see what Meetup group features exist for people to create forum posts, rather than mass group emails which it might be time to switch off. Thoughts?

For the topics outlined below, generally I'm asking for people to email me directly so the list membership doesn't feel spammed.

A base for meetups

I will re-connect with Wavefront folks and find out about location space for meetups but I also know the Hive / Network Hub and other places are able to host these things, though I'm not sure what the setup for those is.

Speakers. topics and sessions

I know that my own connections might be interested in talking android development and I would like to find out who else on the list is interested in that topic.

Wavefront and some of those associated with them used to help arrange Android Dev courses: if you are interested in this specifically, add your name to those interested in the suggested meetup http://www.meetup.com/van-android-developers/#suggested

If you are someone, or know of someone, who would like to dive into a topic at the meetup please do contact me and we can work to see about bringing that about.

I'm also going to start contacting well known folks in Android and seeing if we can import any for sessions, though that always takes longer to arrange. If you have suggestions for speaks you might like to see, let me know.

As for other topics, not strictly development, there remains a demand for these too so they need to be catered to also, probably to a lesser schedule.

Co-organizers

Lastly, but not least, I'm looking for co-organizers. People who have an interest in helping with some of the parts of finding and organizing meetup speakers and dates/times. If you would like to contribute in any way, I would really appreciate your doing so. Contact me directly and we can talk about things in more detail.

Thanks for your time

Jerome
