I'd like to thank you all for your thoughts and suggestions. I will be trying some of these suggestions. Fortunately I can still commute to work (16km) with my bike because I can take the battery in and charge it while I'm working.
I plan to make it out to one of the meetups soon. I won't be able to go for the ride because I'll just be able to make it there and back home, but I'd love to meet some of you and chat for a few minutes at the library.
I think my next e-bike will probably be a regular style (as opposed to a scooter style) bike that's easier to pedal. When my Lead Acid battery dies I may also try out a Lithium battery to see what difference it makes. I'll also start to modify my riding habits too. Right now I pretty much use the throttle like an on/off switch, fully on or fully off.
Peter, I'd love to hear more about how you converted your truck, not that I'd ever try that, but it's still fascinating that you could do it. Maybe I'll catch you at one of the meetups.
Thanks to everyone for helping out an e-bike newbie.
