Have you noticed that our next meeting falls on Halloween night? That's right! As a result, the Toastmaster for the Week, Olga, sees this as a great opportunity to turn our educational meeting into an educational Halloween party!
She encourages everyone to get into a mischievous spirit and assume a new identity for the night. Start with putting on the most modest/creative/ridiculous/fashionable/sexy costume and also take on a cool name! Refine your character by throwing in one or two personal traits that you always wanted to develop. Has the "I can't hear you!" sign gotten too familiar for you? Act as an obnoxious Crazy Clown to discover your voice variety. Too self-conscious? Try Lady Gaga. Do you come off as a distant person? Come as a Silly Monster or a Flirty Nurse. Shy? Lion Tamer! Scared of new technology? iPad mini! Well, I think you got the point by now :)
If you are still reserved about shedding off your old skin for the night, let me give you one last compelling argument. You do that, and I guarantee that you'll make a giant leap along your public speaking path regardless of how advanced you already are. In just one night! You know why? Because this role-playing exercise will have a positive psychological effect on you. If you were always reluctant to try new public-speaking skills because they just don't fit your personality profile, that is the night to do it! Because whatever you do, you can't hurt your reputation. You are not even going to be around. It is just your character!
There is no pressure to strive for the best costume, even though we will have a contest and a prize, generously provided by George Harjani. You can be completely unrecognizable or just grow a tail for the occasion. The only thing she encourages you to avoid is coming as if nothing special is happening.
See you all on Halloween night!
