Stanley Park 'Into the Dusk' Ride - Strong Beginner Plus

  • May 13, 2013 · 6:00 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

Let's ride the "2013 Stanley Park Series"!

Trail Lights no longer 'required' (but still a good idea!)

Dallas and I will take you for a ride up and through the Park to enjoy an array of hidden single track. Our pace will allow the slowest rider to keep up, with regular regrouping stops and a 'sweeper' to prevent people becoming separated from the group.

This is a fun group ride, not an instruction ride, however we will offer assistance as we can to ensure the best possible experience for everyone attending.

** Remember your locks, for our post-ride refuel! **

Details: Duration: 2-2.5 hrs. Weather: Fair to Light rain. For inclement days we will post a Go/No-Go by 4.30pm on Monday.  Meet at 6:00pm at the covered picnic area near the Car Park.  Parking is $3/hr to a max of $10 all night (credit card, loose change, or pay-by-phone only). Look for Dallas on a black and green Norco Fireball (or rootbeer SC Bullit) and Gary on his rootbeer Trek EX (or bright yellow Kona Kula). We'll be looking to get the ride started at 6.05pm!

Terrain: The trails themselves are not steep but they do have technical elements that require some skill: roots, rocks, rolls, some tighter turns, etc.. These are 'proper' trails, not just the wide, flat gravel paths within the Park. Logs and structures do get slippery when damp!

Suitability: Strong Beginner and above.  This ride is ideal for riders with some trail experience who would like to improve fitness & skills without the steeps of a mountain trail. A good cardio level is required as there is a fair amount of pedaling.  All stunts have a ride-around or can be walked.

Equipment: A hardtail (front suspension) mountain bike with proper off-road tires is required as a minimum. No commuters, cruisers, road bikes, etc! A quick-release seatpost clamp is recommended, for easy saddle-up/down between sections. A cycling helmet is mandatory.

Trail lights are still recommended (400+ lumens) as it will get dark in the trails near dusk. Also, remember your commuting lights if you intend to ride home (especially if you join us for the après-ride drink/food!).

(A commuter light is insufficient for trail riding. Please check the forums for light discussions and information)

Please don't put us in the position of having to tell attendees they cannot join the ride for their own safety. We will be strict about Suitability and Equipment.

Restrictions: All riders must be 19+ years old.  No Pets! (Stanley Park is an official 'On-Leash' area, with a $2000 max penalty).

All organizer(s) are volunteers who do not accept responsibility for rider safety and health state before, during and at anytime after this event.

Your Assumption Of Risk

By agreeing to participate in this ride you acknowledge that mountain biking is considered a high risk activity and injuries are a common and ordinary occurrence of the sport. These risks include and are not limited to equipment failures, weather conditions, collisions with natural and man-made objects, including, but not limited to exposed rock, trees, snow, ice, earth stumps and man made obstacles on or adjacent to the mountain bike terrain, collisions with other cyclists, pedestrians, animals, et al; becoming lost or separated from the group; failure to ride safely or within your own ability, and you accept these risks and the possibility of personal injury, death or property damage and the loss resulting therefrom due to any cause and without limitation.  In the event of injury or loss, you and/or next of kin waive all future claims against the organizer(s).

Organizer(s) Reservations

The organizer(s) shall reserve the right to turn away any participant who shows up without RSVP, unprepared and/or ill-equipped to handle this ride. A helmet, water, lights in working order, a good sense of humour and a sense of fun are required no exceptions. Other required items are appropriate clothing, armour, food and a trail side repair kit.

No rain! But that does not mean no mud... Slippery but fun and the small group kept a decent pace even with a relative beginner like Sara. Well done for sticking at it and for the positive attitude all-round and 'Thanks' for getting me out there. No worries Oriana, you did tell us there was a good chance you would not come. Maybe next week?

Shoot just got your message to RSVP confirm. Sorry for no additional response. I was chilled and didn't feel like riding in wetness. Hope it was great. I have yet to get out there.

Well, as I sit down for my 4:30pm decision, the rain has stopped and the sun is shining! Bright, blue and clear sky heading this way from the South-West so I'm going to go along and see who makes it out. Please either update your RSVP or contact me directly if you're not going to be there for 6pm (or if you haven't yet responded and then decide you do want to do it!). Fingers crossed for a dry(ish) evening...

i just got caught in one of the forcasted thunderstorms and am chilled to the bone... i'm out for this ride. Too miserable out to ride 45min to the park, get soaked, ride slippery trails, then ride 45min cold and wet home... guess i'm not hardcore :) Good on you Gary if you still go!!
catch up with you next week tho!

Feel same as Sara. If it is raining I will not go. So don't wait, I will make a decision closer to the time as I was really looking forward to getting out.

I keep my bike in my apartment, so not sure I want to bring it out in this weather. If I'm not there 6pm on the dot, that will mean I'm not coming. But then getting soaked is fun sometimes...

Looking at the forecast, we might get a little damp in the Park this evening! I'll make the call at around 4:30pm* as to cancellation or not, although I need to ride so I'll probably ride unless the rain reaches biblical proportions... >P^) --- [* if that's too late notice for you, let me know and I'll make the decision a little earlier >8^) ]
