Stanley Park "D&G-free" Night Ride - Strong Beginner Plus

  • Feb 3, 2014 · 6:00 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

Let's ride the "2013 (extended!) Stanley Park Series"!

Dallas and I will probably still be too injured to take you for a ride up and through the Park to enjoy an array of hidden single track, so one/some of the other regulars will have to fill in for us. The pace will still allow the slowest rider to keep up, with regular regrouping stops and a 'sweeper' to prevent people becoming separated from the group. Stanley Park is an ideal place to gain experience of night-riding as there is a gentle gradient rather than the steeps of the mountain trails.

** Riding lights are now COMPULSORY **

This is a fun group ride, not an instruction ride, however we will offer assistance as we can to ensure the best possible experience for everyone attending.

** Remember your locks, for our post-ride refuel at our new venue of choice! **

Details: Duration: 2-2.5 hrs. Weather: Fair to Light rain. For inclement days we will post a Go/No-Go by 4.30pm on Monday.  Meet at 6:00pm at the covered picnic area near the Car Park, overlooking the beach.  Parking is $3/hr to a max of $10 all night (credit card, loose change, or pay-by-phone only) in the Car Park. Possible free parking available locally if you have time to search and are lucky! In the unlikely event that our injuries clear up in time, look for Dallas on his rootbeer Santa Cruz Bullit and me on my black Cove Stiffee or my rootbeer & white Trek EX8. Otherwise just ask the group of MTBers at the covered picnic area if they are the VMBM group! We'll be looking to get the ride started at 6.05pm!

Terrain: The trails themselves are not steep but they do have a lot of technical elements that require some skill: roots, rocks, rolls, some tighter turns, etc.. We will be on 'proper' biking trails not the wide, flat gravel paths within the Park. Logs and structures do get very slippery when damp!

Suitability: Strong (experienced) Beginner (and above).  This ride is ideal for riders with some trail experience who would like to improve fitness & riding skills without the steeps of a mountain trail. This is not the ride for complete beginners due to the night-riding element. A good cardio level is required as there is a lot of pedalling.  All stunts have a ride-around or can be walked.  Intermediate and above riders: this ride is geared toward increasing skill and off-road trail comfort for the experienced amateur riders, so it has a lot of stop and go and socializing (but can still be fun!).

Equipment: A hardtail (front suspension) mountain bike with proper off-road tires is required as a minimum. No commuters, cruisers, road bikes, etc! A quick-release seatpost clamp is recommended, for easy saddle-up/down between sections. Trail-riding lights are now mandatory. A cycling helmet is always mandatory.

Please don't put us in the position of having to tell attendees they cannot join the ride for their own safety. We will be strict about Suitability and Equipment.

Restrictions: All riders must be 19+ years old.  No Pets! (Stanley Park is an official 'On-Leash' area, with a $2000 max penalty).

All organizer(s) are volunteers who do not accept responsibility for rider safety and health state before, during and at anytime after this event.

Your Assumption Of Risk

By agreeing to participate in this ride you acknowledge that mountain biking is considered a high risk activity and injuries are a common and ordinary occurrence of the sport. These risks include and are not limited to equipment failures, weather conditions, collisions with natural and man-made objects, including, but not limited to exposed rock, trees, snow, ice, earth stumps and man made obstacles on or adjacent to the mountain bike terrain, collisions with other cyclists, pedestrians, animals, et al; becoming lost or separated from the group; failure to ride safely or within your own ability, and you accept these risks and the possibility of personal injury, death or property damage and the loss resulting therefrom due to any cause and without limitation.  In the event of injury or loss, you and/or next of kin waive all future claims against the organizer(s).

Organizer(s) Reservations

The organizer(s) shall reserve the right to turn away any participant who shows up without RSVP, unprepared and/or ill-equipped to handle this ride. A helmet, water, lights in working order, a good sense of humour and a sense of fun are required no exceptions. Other required items are appropriate clothing, armour, food and a trail side repair kit.

No miracle healing for me so I'm having to drop out. If Dallas can't make it, I'm sure that Tristan knows his way around by now... ;)

I have to bow out as well. My ski trip caused more abuse than I'd hoped. I'll be back next week, weather permitting.

I'll be in AUZ for a couple weeks, see you when I get back.

Gary, what is your injury? What's up with Dallas?

Also, where Dallas crashed was not dangerous at the speed we ride at; it's was only because he was riding it hell-for-leather!

Is there a different speed option?

I've left Dallas and myself as the hosts for now, even though the chance that either of us will be healed enough is low. We need a host to post though. Once we have a regular or two signed up, I'll drop out (I've no more than a 10% chance of healing in time) and I'll leave it to Dallas to see how he feels.
