They're baaaaack!! Swing Aggregation @ Backstage Lounge for Big Band fun,$12

(video taken at the Lux Lounge)

Dave Guiney's 7-piece "little big band" will be playing again at their new venue the  Backstage Lounge on Sunday June 22nd, with special guest vocalist the ultra smooth Don Stewart, plus DJ Jose to keep the place swinging between sets. If you enjoy  old style big band music from the '30s, '40s and '50s (Count Basie, Artie Shaw, etc) then you will love this event. A beginner drop-in swing dance lesson is included in the cover charge of $12.

Link to Port-o-swing page;

This will be the third time for  Swing Aggregation  at the Backstage Lounge on Granville Island. Apparently the first Sunday they played there the place was packed, the second Sunday less so--and who knows how this one will shape up? They don't take reservations at the Backstage, so get there early if you are choosy about where you sit. We will try to grab a couple of tables, but won't be clinging to whole sections for people who may or may not show up  (let's face it, Meet Up no-showers being a chronic condition across the board).  Look for the Meetup sign.  Come join us, or at least pop over to say hello.   We're friendly and won't bite!

The beginner swing dance lesson starts at 7pm, and live music from about 8pm through to 11pm.

Food and drinks available.

This is a cross-posting with the Meet Up for Music meetup group.

It was a really fun evening at the Arts Club backstage on sunday.
    50 or 60 people.

    About half were dancers. .
So the smallish floor wasn't actually crowded, especially since the band is so lively that even I sat out half the time.
The apparent gender imbalance on the meetups never materialized.
Very few of the ladies showed up, normal for meetups.
With other friends of friends who did show, we had a table of a dozen.

Liam, Roy, and another fellow I know from other dances but can't remember his name, were there. I love “Swing Aggregation”. They'll be back sunday july 13.
Checked out the band for next week “Van Django” on YouTube.
They look good. I plan to be there. Roy and Gary usually are as well.

The people who did not dance seemed to have a good evening listening, chatting, and maybe meeting someone. So it rates as a very successful evening.

Frank, thanks for inviting all those dancing gents. I got a quick on-the-floor lesson in Merengue. It was brilliant.

Another great evening of music and dancing with Swing Aggregation. And it turned out just as Frank had predicted; we ended up with about an even number of ladies and gents (despite the lopsided looking rsvp list), so it was 'gender balanced', plus there was plenty of general mingling and socializing. I think there were about 16 of us at our tables, so not a bad turn out considering the jazz fest is on.

Yes, getting caught up with errands. Went for a good ride this afternoon and the time flew by. Sorry, I didn't get a chance to hear this band.

I will aim for 6:30 too, and mention it to my friends. There will be a group of us there. A drink before dancing sounds like a good idea. And yes, I know half a dozen (non-meetup) gents who turn up to this event, so the gender imbalance Frank mentions is not so skewed as it seems.

Forecast is for day temperature in the low 70's F, low 20's C.
The outdoor seating is great on a warm evening.
And this is practically the solstice.
So let's enjoy this lovely evening with a beverage on the patio before dancing.

I plan to be there by 6:30 and will try to get a table close to the door.

For anyone who hasn't heard them this little “Big Band” is great.
Usually 7 pieces, but close your eyes and you won't know they
have only one tenor sax, one trombone, etc. Ladies, please don't be discouraged by the apparent gender imbalance.
    Typically many don't show.
Some of the men who attend regularly are very good swing dancers.
There's a lot of general mingling.

    Please ignore my previous comment.
    Will go there next week
