Hey Miles,

I saw you talk at Railsconf last year :) Good job!

It wasn’t long after coming back that Godfrey and a couple of others encouraged me and Matt to setup a regular hack night on top of our monthly meetup. Just to bring people together; we’ve had a good turn out every second week on Tuesday evening since.

Some people just quietly work away on their own things, beginners have asked questions, I’ve mentored a couple of people, asked for help myself on some things, it’s been great.

I know it’s hard for you and folks from Fraser Valley to come over but if you have the choice to work downtown, pick the Tuesday and come along. The next one is going to be next week, it starts from 6:30 onwards at Launch Academy.

I've been reading the discussion here about the Ruby community in Vancouver and the desire to develop more talent. Hope this might help :)

I've been a part of this community since Canada on Rails back in 2006, and run the Fraser Valley Ruby Brigade. We've been meeting every week for over 5 years, and by our measures our group is a great success and still going strong.

I tried to build a club three times (including the Vancouver Ruby User Group after Jeremy Hubert and Zed Shaw left) but they all failed. It wasn't until I learned from the leaders of the Seattle Ruby Brigade (Ryan Davis, Eric Hodel, and Aaron Patterson) did I finally succeed with FV.rb.

Here's the lightning talk I gave last year at RailsConf

Ryan Davis also gave the closing talk at Mountain West Ruby Conf 2014 about the same subject, but the video is not available yet. When it is I'll forward it to this list.

Hope this helps!
