It's a week before Leap Day and two great speakers will be showing everyone how they're making strides using Scala for their projects. Join us Wednesday Feb 22 7pm at the Network Hub for the next meetup!
Jeremy Pierre on the HootSuite team will be sharing "Elastic Event Based Systems With Akka: A Hootsuite Case Study". Hootsuite manages over 3 million users and 6 million unique social network accounts. With the advent of many social networks starting to offer streaming APIs in place of REST calls(e.g. Twitter, Foursquare), HootSuite needed to create a robust service layer to handle thousands of inbound messages per second for everything from analytics to simple end user notifications. Leveraging Scala and Akka in concert with ZooKeeper and RabbitMQ has allowed a layered and loosely coupled solution. While ZooKeeper promotes elastic scaling for a self-aware base layer, RabbitMQ via Akka's AMQP module provides a flexible inter-service communication bus that allows subsystems to be reactive and agnostic regarding others' location and implementation.
Alex Cruise on the Metafor team, a veteran in the Vancouver Scala community, will also be presenting a surprise topic for us.
Looking forward to seeing you there!

Was very inspiring and one of the best meetups yet! A hint of infrastructure combined with great upcoming features for scala, all mixed with one of Vancouver's leading companies showing us how they're making the most of it. Fucking awesomesauce.
