About the Film: The film will open in Toronto Theatres on Friday, August 6, 2010, with August 13 (TBC) and August 20th openings to follow in Vancouver and Montreal respectively. The Canadian theatrical opening comes after a July 30th US premiere in LA, New York and Washington that will immediately widen to other major US cities. Hugh Hefner: Playboy, Activist and Rebel, reveals for the first time, not only the flamboyant, outspoken founder of the Playboy empire, but also Hugh Hefner’s many fierce battles with nearly all levels of the American government, the religious right, and militant feminists.
Hefner is revealed as a hedonistic playboy, but, more importantly, as a groundbreaking advocate and catalyst for civil rights, the First Amendment, and human rights.

When Hefner launched Playboy magazine in December 1953, the magazine achieved instant notoriety and astounding success. Its magnet was a nude centerfold of Marilyn Monroe. Hefner became a champion of the sexual revolution and, immediately, the forces of Church and State initiated a war against him that raged over the decades.

When Hefner agreed to participate in Berman’s film, he granted her unprecedented access to his vast. personal archives and agreed that she would maintain creative and editorial freedom – something he’s never done before. Compelling interviews with a Who’s Who of the decades, and rare footage, present an entertaining snapshot of the life of an extraordinary man.

Thank you to the organizer for this opportunity.

IMO a really well made film, and with big Canadian tie ins. It seemed that the Gene Simmon's opening quote in the movie(oh man, that was fantastic) set the stage for a look at the man's "rewards", but it was'nt at all. I left the theatre inspired with the man's efforts and contributions outside of his primary business, many of which I had no knowledge of and/or the impact of them on our very society.

And a better understanding of his life's challenges. Illuminating.

I thought it was excellent as a documentary for its own sake in presenting everyone's views - and I for one came away thinking I may never want to be bunny material but I thank him greatly for standing up for our right to free speech and to live as we wish beyone the reach of the state into the our bedrooms. Notable that it is a Canadian documentary. I will recomment it to all I see.
