Laura Guerrero lives with her father and younger brother in Baja California, on the border with the United States. Her dream is to be a beauty queen, but is it worth selling her soul for? Guns, drug dollars, sexual favors and beauty pageants... In a country run by criminal organizations, what is the price of success? Based on a true story published in the press, Miss Bala is a hard-hitting portrait of how countries like Mexico and Colombia have suffered at the hands of the drug cartels. Since 2006, drug-related violence has claimed the lives of 36,000 victims in Mexico, we are told at the end of the film. Storyline aside, the beautiful Stephanie Sigman, a.k.a. Laura Guerrero, infects us with her angst, while her protracted silences make for a nail-biting watch.
