For this meet up I plan to screen the movie Macross Frontier: The False Songstress, which is an alternate retelling of some of the events from the Macross Frontier TV series I'd recently finished screening. Since it is an alternate retelling of the story rather than a sequel, the movie does not require the viewer to have seen the TV series before.
Here's a plot summary I wrote for the TV version of Frontier (most of it is also accurate for the movie version:
The year is 2059, and humanity has begun to recover from near extinction its war with the alien species known as the Zentraedi. Vast colonization fleets have been dispatched, among them the 25th Large Scale Colonization Fleet Macross Frontier. Centered around the gigantic colony ship known as Island One, this massive armada travels the desolate expanse of the galaxy in search of a new home.
For the citizens aboard the Frontier fleet however, all this is simply a background to their daily lives. Alto Saotome, a kabuki actor turned pilot trainee, longs for a world where the sky does not end at two thousand feet. Meanwhile, a girl named Ranka Lee works part time at a Chinese Restaurant, her cheerful and energetic disposition masking her status as a survivor of the destruction of the 117th Large Scale Research Fleet. The most exciting news aboard Island One is the visit of the ?Galactic Fairy? Sheryl Nome, a popular idol singer from one of Frontier?s sister fleets.
But danger lurks in the vastness of the space that the Frontier fleet travels through. When reconnaissance craft pass into an area of space inhabited by the insectoid Vajra, they come under attack, and it is not long before the fleet itself becomes a target. The lives of everyone aboard Island One are affected as the fleet finds itself under the threat of annihilation by a foe they can neither understand nor communicate with.
A trailer for the movie can be found on youtube:

Since the movie is only about two hours long I'm thinking of rescreening the first seven episodes of the TV series afterwards for comparison, but we can decide on whether to do that or something else after the movie on the day of the event (note -it's easy to get to a skytrain station from my place, so no one is required to stay after the end of the movie if they don't want to).
