Underscores — a 1,000 hour head start — Konstantin Obenland

Starter themes are increasingly popular amongst WordPress theme developers. At Automattic we use Underscores(_s) for themes we create, and it even found its way into the latest default theme. What was the idea behind it, what does the future look like, and how does it influence theme development in general? These questions will be answered here.

Get Template Smart: Using WP Template Parts and the Template Hierarchy to Streamline Your Theme — Alicia St. Rose

Ever had to dig into a loop.php and gotten lost in a jungle of conditionals? Wouldn't it be nice to have a file for one specific custom loop, one that you can use over and over again where needed? Ever created a theme with a custom homepage template and crossed your fingers that the client doesn't fiddle with the page template drop down in the Admin? Wouldn't it be nice to have tamperproof custom templates that are automatically generated?

I will demonstrate how WordPress' get_template_part() and getting familiar with the WordPress template hierarchy can solve all these challenges, allowing you to fine tune your theme customization and save time and frustration.

This talk is geared towards anyone who intends to edit and create template files in a WordPress Theme.
