Vegan Drinks at the Kitty Cat Klub!

Vegan Drinks is here for Summer 2012! Our first stop will be Thursday, June 21st at the Kitty Cat Klub in the heart of Dinkytown. Come enjoy the unseasonably warm Minnesota weather with a cool drink and a seat in one of their fantastic vintage couches. We will be showing up at 7p.m. Please contact us with questions or for parking tips, or if you need directions (anyone else want to bike?). Otherwise, be ready to get your drink on! See you there!

Thanks for coming out everyone! It was great to see all you beautiful vegans/chat for a while. Hope you had as much fun as I did! Oh, and we did get a chance to pass out some leaflets on vegan Environmentalism (Thanks Yuga) to the attendees of the 'Goth Rock' show...and I did message the owner with our distaste of our dead friend's decapitated heads on the wall. Hope you had fun, can't wait to do it again!

I'm also sorry I had to cancel at the last minute. I was sitting at the car dealership getting my tire patched. I hope everyone had fun!

If this is going to be effective, I think we should go into it committed to our venue selection and express that we'd love to keep coming there (because the KCK is awesome regardless of what's hanging on the wall), but we'd like to respectfully express some concern over the decor. :)

I don't think Kris Anne meant for it to be disrespectful and I get what you are both saying. Interpreting internet jargon is hard to do and it's easy to come off the wrong way. I think that Kris Anne was just trying to prove a point that it's likely more effective (now, that we have all committed to going) to go and express our concerns respectfully. If we al backed out, what message would that send the establishment honestly? He'd (I know the owner, hence the "he") probably just be offended.

I was offering an opposing viewpoint, and I did not intend disrespect. I am sorry you felt that way.

I speak as someone who has worked on such logistical tactics, as well as who consistently supports vegan-friendly businesses and organizations, and whose vegan meetups and groups back in NYC & NJ also followed similar procedures. Meaning, I didn't post my concerns to be a Debbie Downer, but to state important points that others attending might also find important. After that, do with it what you will, but there is no need to disrespect my concerns.

...So simply mentioning to them you don't appreciate the deer head and would prefer it gone, doesn't do anything. It's not coordinate and premeditated like a Facebook/Twitter campaign, or an in-person request by the group's organizers/members saying that they WOULD like to be repeat customers for generously-paying vegan events with 30+ people in the future. They're already getting their $$ from us vegans, and from the non-vegans, so they have no real reason to change other than an unlikely whim.

Kris, my point was also logistical. It's effective to support actual vegan-friendly (food & otherwise) businesses in the community. If we want to educate and change places that aren't, that's fine, but it should be coordinated and effective. In this case, the club has no pressing financial impetus to change. Either way they get a large group spending a bunch of drinks $$ there, and likely repeat event customers too.

I find it highly unlikely that the owner commissioned a deer head to hang on the wall. It's likely an old one. Is it still offensive and wrong? Yep. So, we could all cancel. Or, we could all show up and suggest a change in decor that would guarantee repeat business from the Twin Cities vegan community. Seems to me that action will do more than cancelling an RSVP in this case.

I understand that and don't prohibit people from making their own choices, but I would rather financially support places that don't do that, and plenty in town don't. So I'll be canceling.

them that the tide is turning and people don't like this type of decor.

    Hey Marcy,

I get what you're saying. This place is known for using repurposed and vintage items in their decor. This doesn't excuse the mounted deer head, but I would guess that it's likely a vintage item. This would be a good opportunity to tell the manager in a nice way that the deer head is really off-putting and ruins the vibe for a lot of people. It's pretty hard to avoid places that pay for dead animal parts - any place that uses leather is in this category, but hopefully we can educate

Hey guys...I finally checked out the website for this place, and I was really surprised by their own official photos clearly showing a deer head mounted on one wall: http://www.kittycatklub.net/pho...

Since this is specifically a "Vegan Drinks" event, cross-posted as a "Minneapolis Vegan Meetup" event, & "vegan" is a lifestyle (not simply plant-based eating), why are we financially supporting a place that pays for dead animal parts to be displayed? Is this a repeat location?

Garrett- I know I will definitely be there past 8:30, I am sure many other people will be as well! (They are open until at least 1, so we've got plenty of 'chillin' time)

Hey Marcy, where in Northside? I'll be driving down from the Fridley area, it'd be no problem to carpool..

  • Marcy A

Can anyone give me a lift, especially on the way back? I'm northside. (If so, please message me - thanks!)
