ABOUT THE PRESENTATION:
In September, Congress will vote on free trade agreements with Panama,
Colombia, and South Korea. These Bush-negotiated, Obama-supported
agreements are a major threat to animals, the environment, and public
Advocates of humane, sustainable, and fair international trade policies
consider Rep. Steve Rothman the NY metropolitian area's critical swing
vote on these agreements. Normally a foe of free trade agreements,
Rothman is considering reversing his normal stance and voting for these
terrible trade deals.
If these agreements are ratified, they will:
* Increase factory farming and consumption of animal products.
* Facilitate the spread of mad cow disease, bird flu ,and swine flu and
increase the likelihood of another live burial of millions of chickens
and pigs in South Korea.
* Endanger critical wildlife habitats by encouraging logging, mining,
and oil and natural gas extraction.
* Give US corporations the right to challenge Korean, Colombian, and
Panamanian environmental laws in unelected international tribunals if
enforcement of those laws will limit potential future corporation profits.
* Give Korean, Colombian, and Panamanian corporations (including US
corporations domiciled in Panama as a tax haven) the right to use these same rules
to challenge US environmental laws.
* Expand illegal wildlife trafficking.
* Poison wildlife by encouraging the continuation of aerial coca
fumigation programs in Colombia.
* Squander US leverage to encourage Korea to crack down on cruel and
unsustainable practices like horse fighting, live dog meat markets, and
the bear bile trade, whaling, and bluefin tuna fishing.
* Provide a source of new animals for marine mammal parks.
* Allow the US to import cars to South Korea that fail to meet Korean
auto emissions standards.
Global Justice for Animals and the Environment, working in tandem with
TradeJustice NY Metro, a coalition of environmental and social justice
groups opposed to NAFTA-style free trade agreements, are organizing
Rothman constituents to take action to urge him to vote NO! on these
disastrous trade deals.
Find out how YOU can take action to stop Congress and President Obama
from trading away animal rights and environmental protection!
