Book Club Discussion: Strategic Action for Animals by Melanie Joy

In Strategic Action for Animals, Melanie Joy explains how to use strategy to exponentially increase the effectiveness of activism for animals. Drawing on diverse movements and sources, she offers tried and true tactics based on well-established principles and practices. She also explains how to address the most common problems that weaken the movement, such as dissidence among organizations and activists, inefficient campaigns, wasted resources, and high rates of burnout. Whether you're working alone or with a group, whether you're a seasoned activist or new to the movement, Strategic Action for Animals can help you make the most of your efforts to make the world a better place for animals.

Thanks, Elizabeth - Yeah I read a review of The Vegetarian Myth which convinced me not to bother reading it. I think her points about our present form of agriculture being unsustainable are true & important, but why turn on plant-based eaters? It's a perfect example of what George was saying the other day about how minority groups who are trying to create change end up splintering & turning on each other.

Hi Folks! Has anyone read "The Vegetarian Myth" by ex-vegan, Lierre Keith (I haven't read it, but judging by the author interview I read, it looks like it will be disturbing/challenging) or "Uncaged: Top Activists Share Their Wisdom on Effective Farm Animal Advocacy"? The latter I am reading now; it was offered free for Amazon Kindle users. It's excellent so far in my opinion; some overlap with Melanie Joy's book, but some excellent additional points. Just wondering if anyone had read these and/or if they might be suitable for a book discussion in the future. :) Gwen

Gwen, thanks for the heads-up about the "Uncaged" book and how it's free for Kindle users. I'm looking forward to reading it. It's my understanding that "The Vegetarian Myth" has been widely discredited, mainly due to shoddy research. Also, the author's claim of being a vegan for 20 years is a lie, as she (unashamedly) states in an interview (http://www.kpfa.org/a...): “I never cheated on beef, but I certainly binged on eggs and dairy every chance I got.” If you listen to the interview (I could only stomach so much), you'll hear a lot of other ridiculous statements, such as: "Omnivores don't binge on vegan foods, it's the vegans who binge in the other direction." As though omnivores don't binge on candy, potato chips, Oreos, and French fries?! (All vegan foods.) She also states that complex carbohydrates (such as whole grains) are the equivalent of white sugar. Perhaps there are good critiques of veganism out there, but to me this is not one of them.

With all due respect to Ms Keith, she's drawn a conclusion and attempted to create a set of facts to back them up. Sadly, her facts are either myths or flat out lies. Pass the damn Oreos please!

Hey does anyone know if Korean food in general - and Woo Jung in Ayer in particular - is vegan-friendly?

    March 25, 2013

    • Steve

they don't have a website and yelp suggests nothing about being vegan friendly. You could call. :-)

      March 25, 2013

    • Gwen M.

Thanks, you two - I ate there before I was vegan, and I think there were vegan options, but can't remember for sure..... :) Gwen

I'm glad I went even though I wasn't able to read the book ahead of time - great conversation!

was a great meet up in a good discussion.

Sherry on Sarah's computer: Let's start an activist subcommittee this Sunday! (Victoria agrees) Anyone who can't make it, comment here or email me at [masked] -- we can pick a date for a "virtual committee meeting"/conference call soon! Can't wait to apply some of Melanie's wisdom on behalf of those who can't speak for themselves... Victoria, Sarah and I have some ideas about a 3-week vegan challenge for environmentalists that we want to bounce off you folks - and any activism needs many hands for it to work well.

Thanks everyone - I feel like much less of a slacker now!

I'm about 60% of the way through the book and a 7 hour bus ride on Friday. I'm still not sure I'll finish it. :-)

The book I ordered was supposed to ship within 24 hours. That was on March 8 and I still have not received it. Supposedly it is en route to my house. However, even if I were to receive it in the next couple of days, there is no way I'll have it read by Sunday. I'd still like to come and be a part of the discussion if others are agreeable, but I understand if not.

    • Laura B

You should definitely come. I agree with Sarah.

      March 20, 2013

  • Sarah Jeppson Z.

Of course you should come! I don't think I've EVER been to a book group where everyone got around to reading the book.

I just feel bad that I haven't even started!! :)

if we can apply these principles to the human animal, and our efforts on their/our behalf, that might be worth the trip. mlc

I tried to get it on my Nook but it's not available...

We are probably both waiting on the same book through Minuteman. :)

      March 8, 2013

    • Melissa

Sadly, it's no longer available at Barnes and Noble.com.

      March 8, 2013

I'm having a hard time finding this book. I can't get it on my Nook, and it's no longer available on Barnes and Noble.com. Amazon won't ship it until March 22 at the earliest. I have a copy reserved at the library, but there's a good chance I may not get it in time. I'll keep searching, but may not get to read it before the 24th.

    March 8, 2013

I ordered mine from Barnes & Noble.com. Should be here soon. Hope it's easy to read!
