Upton's Breakroom

Greetings!

For the month of September, we're VERY excited to be visiting Chicago's latest, all-vegan cafe, Upton's Breakroom! The cafe opened a mere three weeks ago, and we're happy to extend our support and help kick-start this new venture!

As many of you know, Upton's Naturals seitan has been a much-loved, locally-made product for a number of years. Over the past 8 months, Dan and Nicole of Upton's have tirelessly been working on the construction of a brand-new, built-from-the-ground structure which houses not only the production facility, but Upton's Breakroom cafe, and we couldn't be happier!

The Upton's Breakroom menu consists of a nice selection of sandwiches and sides. In addition, the cafe features baked goods made in-house by Kelly Peloza, author of the cookbook, The Vegan Cookie Connoisseur, as well as the upcoming release, Cheers to Vegan Sweets! As this is a pay-as-you-go event, guests can order as little or as much as they'd like!

Here's how it's all going to play out:

As Upton's Breakroom is small and unable to accommodate our group indoors, we'll be dining alfresco at tables set up behind the building.

• Upon arrival, guests will go directly to the back of the building to check in and receive a name tag. The name tag will assist Upton's staff with identifying Vegan Chicago members, as opposed to customers who arrive off the street, which will help expedite our food orders.

• Once orders are placed, guests will return outside to find a seat and mingle with other Vegan Chicago members until their food is delivered.

Transportation: For those driving, non-metered (free) parking is available on the street. For those biking, there are two bike racks next to the building. For those taking public transportation, the Grand bus stops right in front of Upton's.

Please consider joining me to show some Vegan Chicago love to Upton's Naturals, a company that not only has produced delicious vegan products that have been enjoyed for years by many locally and throughout the country, but one that has generously extended support numerous times to the vegan community!

Hope to see you there!

Debra

This was such a fantastic, well planned and executed meetup! It did not occur to me that I would actually get to meet the people behind Upton's. I feel like I can brag with info to my foodie friends! Thank you so much, Debra!

Hi Debra, I am so disappointed that I cant make it but glad that at least Pete got to hopefully take my place. I have been a vegetarian since 13.(when I realized I was eating the same thing as my dog pretty much). I found out in my 20's I was allergic to soy. If I didn't get enough grief already. I'm so glad times are changing slowly but any headway is great. I was shocked when my dogs eyes rolled back into her head & she had a seizure & unfortunately its not her ears it neurological. I have 3 dogs left & 1 cat. My cat & 2 dogs are ill & my dog is seriously ill. They are the cat & 2 dogs are 14 & 1 dog is 7 all rescues. Again I am sorry for such short notice. I was so looking forward to it. But all of you make me feel I am not so alone anymore in this world. I thank you for all your hard work. I only pray nothing else happens so I can make it next time. Lots of luv sent you & to everybodies day tomorrow. L.A.

This is bittersweet for me. I hate not being able to make it and break bread with you all, but I'm happy that someone else on the list can go :) Enjoy!

While I'm not able to attend, I look forward to meeting fellow Chicago vegans at the next event! I had the opportunity to dine at Upton's Breakroom recently, and it was fantastic: you are all in for a treat! I'm still dreaming about their scones.

Maybe you could hold another event considering the number on the waiting list?

    September 5, 2013

    • Debra

Thank you for the suggestion, Kathy. We're unable to have back-to-back events at Upton's this Saturday, and future meetup plans for the next few months are already in the works. We hope members who aren't able to attend Saturday's gathering will visit Upton's Breakroom on their own.

A soft-serve machine was just installed in Upton's Breakroom, and Chicago Vegan Foods' Temptation ice cream is now on the menu! Woo hoo!

    does my confirmation include a +1 ?

    August 22, 2013

    • Debra

Joe, I don't see '+1' next to your name. Did you add a guest when you initially RSVP'd?

I thought I did but when I got the waiting list clearance I noticed it wasn't there

  • Stephanie La B.

It's says I'm on the wait list. Can I show up the day of and see if there's any last min openings?

    August 22, 2013

    • Debra

Stephanie, it's still early, so let's wait a bit and see what happens. A few people have already dropped out and names from the waiting list have been moved up to the attendance list. I anticipate more such activity as the event date gets closer.

How are waitlists and cancellations handled? Do you leave the opening up for grabs or automatically assign the one who has been waiting the longest?

    August 17, 2013

    • Debra

Pete, via Meetup's automated system, when an opening becomes available, the next person on the waiting list is automatically bumped up. The exception to that is when someone on the waiting list is bringing one or more guests. That person will only be bumped up when the total number of spots he/she has requested becomes available all at once. It's not uncommon for members to cancel close to the date of an event and for those on the waiting list to be moved up to the attendance list.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
