Chef John Cadman has been committed to providing the children in our schools the healthiest possible meals for a good number of years as he's managed food services in both public and private schools in Maui.
John, who is a vegan, started his career in food as a chef at top Maui resort hotels, and then went on to work for the Hawaii Department of Education at both elementary and high schools in Maui for 15 years, before moving on to becoming Food Service Director for Kamehameha Schools Maui Campus.
He will share how he has managed, within strict guidelines and budgets, to give students healthy meals with great veggie options that they enjoy, as well as what he has learned of the true costs of the National School Lunch program, which mass feeds 30 million school children a day in this country. With subsidies and handouts of surplus commodities plus other foods from government sources, this is the most popular, yet flawed social welfare progrm in our nation's history.
Please come to learn about this fascinating and important subject, and why you, as an individual, a parent or grandparent, a policy maker, or someone who works with or in schools, should be concerned, and how you can help to contribute to the healthiest possible future for our children and for our country. You'll likely find some tips on making delicious healthy dishes on a budget yourself!
John and his family live in Haiku, Maui, where he and his three sons enjoy surfing. His current passion is creating raw vegan desserts!
This free public lecture is a presention of the Vegetarian Society of Hawaii. We invite you to come, and to enjoy tasty free vegan refreshments courtesy of Down to Earth afterwards!
