Let's go swimming! The weather is hot and nothing's better than jumping in the cool water of Nelson Landing for a swim. For those who desire a little more adventure, we can do a little cliff jumping. Less, adventure? You can float in a raft or just lounge in the cool water. It takes about an hour to get there from town, so we should have a few hours to play in and around the water. There is little to no hiking involved in this, but there are some trails that lead to more secluded coves. We can do a little exploring for future trips. I'm always disgusted and saddened to see the amount of trash at this place. We can bring some plastic bags and do our part in cleaning up. The main cove can be reached by car, but it's a dirt road that's rocky. I wouldn't be comfortable driving my car on it. Vehicles with higher clearance and better suspension will do fine. Four wheel drive isn't necessary. We'll meet at Railroad Pass Casino, on 95, between Henderson and Boulder City. Then we'll drive out past the little town of Nelson, out to the river. There's very little services out there so make sure to have enough gas, plenty of water and whatever snacks/food you want to bring. You can bring rafts, inflatable boats, kayaks, but nothing motorized. This is part of Lake Mead National Recreational Area and there's rules. Be aware that there is not very much shade in this area. The only way to beat the heat is in the water. Be sure to bring your own forms of protection against the sun. There's room for umbrellas or portable shelters, but sometimes it can be windy. Children will have a blast. Friendly dogs are welcome.
