London Vegetarian Drinks and/or Dinner at Tibits

  • August 29, 2014 · 6:30 PM

Hello lovely veggie people,

Please join Bridget and myself for dinner and/or drinks at Tibits from 6.30pm onwards on Friday 29th August 2014

New members welcome as always.

Tibits is in Heddon Street which is off of Regent Street. Nearest tubes are Oxford Circus and Piccadilly Circus.

Please ensure that you update your reply if you find you are no longer able to attend.

Just to explain (for those who haven’t been before) how a London Vegetarian Meet-up at Tibits works:

When you arrive (depending on how hungry you are) you might want to first come downstairs to say hello to some people. You will be offered a name badge and given the opportunity to mark yourself as a first timer, neither is obligatory :-)

We don’t all sit down to eat at the same time (and some of us don’t eat) so if you want to eat, whenever you’re ready you can just go upstairs and help yourself to whatever you fancy from the buffet.

There’s a great selection of very tasty food, but if you’re on a budget please be aware that you pay for your food according to its weight and it can get quite pricey if you’re not careful. It’s not unusual for a good plateful to cost £12 to £15 (I’ve even known people pay around £17).

Take your plate of food to the bar/counter/till where you will be asked to put it on the scales and will be told how much to pay.

Tips:

• To minimise the time your hot food spends on your plate before it gets to your mouth (i.e. cools down) - you might want to go around the buffet choosing the cold foods at the bottom first and put the hot foods on your plate last.

• All the food in Tibits is vegetarian – if it has a V symbol it’s vegan. There are other symbols – just ask the lovely staff if you have any special dietary requirements

• Help yourself to a FREE bread roll and remember not to put it on your plate (otherwise you’ll pay for it if the staff don’t notice it there)

• If you prefer not to carry lots of things downstairs at the same time – you might want to get your drink first and ask someone to look after it while you get your food.

• Some of us drink alcohol, others don’t

• There’s free tap water from a fountain/tap in front of you as you walk in – on the left just before the stairs - there should be glasses on the shelf (if not ask at the bar)

• Cutlery will be given to you when you pay

• There is a lift for anyone with mobility/stair issues but it’s painfully slow (it’s actually a large dumb waiter) it’s near the buffet – you need to keep your hand on the down/up button for it to move. Please only use this if you need to.

• I’m sure this doesn't need saying for most of you lovely people, but just in case: if you are sitting down but have already eaten and see someone with food and nowhere to sit – please do the right thing and let them have your seat (at least while they eat)!

Any questions just ask below.

Look forward to seeing you all.

Malcolm

MJ, this is for you - my suggestion.

Book a table for 30 - 50 for 7pm (6pm too early to eat), first come, first served, no late-comers allowed. They are allowed to be 10 mins late only, but no more. How does that sound?

It was for MJ. Perhaps you could do an event in Surrey for veggies?

Hi Karen, interesting idea. I am not sure such a thing would attract a huge following. Restricting availability works well the first time, trouble is the next event pays the price as all those who have traveled in and get turned away vow never to darken my doorstep again. . I will definitely add it to the list of options for consideration though. Many Thanks, Malc :-)

Perhaps you could try not turning up an hour late Andrew? And then blaming everyone else.

    Works for me.

:-) Looks like he has accepted my invitation to B*gger off anyway. M.

Is there really this many people going?

Anyone who does not turn up should be removed from the group

    • MJ

It may come to that :-(

A massive thank you to everyone who came along last night. Super to see so many new faces and catch up with some more established ones.
Particular mention goes to Bridget who very successfully hosted her first event Good Job.... Cheers lass :-)
Oh yes..... And I have been specifically requested, by Natalie and Tara, to state that they came last night. Lucky girls.
So I wish you a grand weekend, hope to see you all again next month. For those who can't wait, keep an eye out for the "Sunday supper club" (looking like it might be the 14th sept as a guess) .
Oh and lastly .... To the people who didn't bother to turn up or changed their rsvps at the last minute. Congratulations, you have brought the need for people attending my meetups to pay a deposit one step closer.
Well done Di*ks.... Your cards have been marked. Malc x

Let me be honest. This is not a democracy it is a benign autocracy (A free one at that) . If you want all my members to pay an annual fee and then an event fee then I shall consider working for my "customers" and things may be different. This is me and my team, PAYING OUR OWN MONEY AND SPENDING OUR TIME TO MAKE EVENTS HAPPEN FOR YOU. If you don't like it, PLEASE B*gger off . Don't make our life harder. Don't try to make it so that some people who act like D*cks think it is OK to behave as I have described above because eventually if I fail to persuade people to behave like grownups, not selfish children, and have to move to a deposit scheme then I and my team will probably just stop doing events for the group, so every one looses out.

This issue is important. It is so important that I am taking the time to write this at 4.30 on a sunday morning in the period between getting in and falling into bed. Please do not flatter yourself that I am doing so as I consider your missives to be worthy of this level of attention. I am doing so because these things need to be made public and you have provided the perfect opportunity for that to happen. I hope everybody gets to read this and in fact I may just email the entire conversation to the membership to facilitate that.
I welcome feedback on this thread, ideas for solving the problem and especially offers to become organisers (though I admit I am not selling it well here;-) )
And now I must love you all and leave you
Best wishes and fond regards, Malcolm

    August 29

    • MJ

Hi Rosemary, as far as I can see you are on the "waiting" list (joined it yesterday), not the "attending" list. please keep an eye on that as the day goes by as you may be moved onto the "attending " list if people drop out.

Ha ha, a bit brutal language MJ, but have to agree with you. I think that many more than 50 people would be too crowded downstairs that is if people (and it only takes 1 minute to do) update their RSVPs. This gives people a chance who by next thursday would be certain they are able to go rather than someone just putting their name down weeks ago and forgetting they did so just so they can get in. As Malcolm has stated he doesn't charge - so could be nice if we at least club together and bought him a drink or two.

    1 · August 25

  • Michael R.

Kind of a shame that only 50 people are allowed since Tibits is a pretty large venue capable of having a capacity of well over 100.

    August 25

    • MJ

This is such an ongoing problem that Tibits will no longer accept my word for how many people are going. That is all we could get! See it's not just me having a rant, it has quantifiable negative results.
Now I have tried explaining this to people, I have threatened people, I have even thrown some repeat offenders out of the group to make an example......
Makes no bloody difference. Now as it appears that "a thing with no cost has no value" to these people the only option left to me is to charge refundable deposits and hand them back on the night. That is a logistical nightmare and I really can't be having with it.
So if anyone can think of another way to encourage people not to be such Di*ks I am all ears :-)
And if anyone is thinking of not showing up, Please Don't be a Di*k . Thank you Mx

      August 25

    • MJ

And Micael, please don't think I am haveing a go at you, I am actually gratefull for the feed line to pop this little missive in here :-) Malc
