Day in Harrow and Edgware - Chinese Dinner

Join Volentians at Loving Hut, Edgware...

To make a day of it, why not attend our lunch Meetup at The Karma Free Pizza Company, who're opening up for us at 1pm.

Open since July 4th, it has seating for 16 people, plus takeaway. Using 'slaughter-free' dairy products, its bases are vegan, with organic flour, and they can make vegan pizzas using Cheezly mozzarella and cheddar. Menu. Review by ToHappyVegans.

We'll then visit Roxbourne Park, with its conservation area...

...and miniature railway open weekend (weather permitting)...

...followed by drinks at The Moon on the Hill Wetherspoon pub...

...a short bus ride from Loving Hut. See this Google Map for locations.

    Right yep, I think so

Cheers Drummond. We usually muddle through, though it's always going to be difficult to judge how long things will take... I'd rather have things to do, that get skipped, than not.

I very much appreciate the ambition, and I hope this doesn't put you off organising more interesting outings Richard, shame I couldn't make the whole day. I don't mind at all if there are unforeseen problems, all just for fun of course. Thanks v much for all the work you've put in.

I'm sure it would have been okay, but for me underestimating how long we'd be at Karma (and Veggie Inn closing, of course). The wet weather and miniature railway misunderstanding was very unfortunate too.

Not a lousy organiser at all Richard but sometimes I think you might just overstretch yourself a little bit, that's all, I do it in some ways myself egt trying to attend too many demos, so recognise it when others try to fit in lots. A long day out with lots of moving from place to place is tricky, that was partly why I favoured Sakonis, I thought getting to Edgware was too much, and in the end we didn't bother with Sakonis anyway, so quite glad I hadn't arranged to definitely meet anyone there.

    No problem, tks for organising.

Ah, good, sorry I didn't recognise you Drummond (Unfortunately I didn't get much chance to mingle).

I did actually make it in the end, few hours resting seemed to do the trick. Enjoyed the Loving Hut, extraordinary having the whole menu vegan.

Good food, great company, lousy organiser (me) ;-)

  • Richard Ⓥ M.

Thanks to everyone who came along (there were about 20 of us in total), especially those who braved the wet weather and long journey to join us for the whole event. Apologies for the lack of train rides (the website wasn't clear that Saturday was an 'open weekend' for other clubs and their families only) and the no-show at the Wetherspoons, due, in part, to the lack of time (having spent much longer at Karma than anticipated).

Hope you're feeling better Drummond and enjoying the bank holiday.

Great food, great company and obviously great times!

I'm not going to make tonight, sorry, feeling a bit dodgy. It's not self induced by the way - honest guv

    August 27, 2011

  • Richard Ⓥ M.

It's a conspiracy... first we had Veggie Inn closing, then came weather warnings, and now Meetup will be down tomorrow for maintenance!

NB. The 's' is missing off Nishma's link - http://www.shambhus.co.uk/desserts

  • Richard Ⓥ M.

Hi Nishma. Shyam at Karma is intending to offer some vegan cakes for sale at lunchtime (I think he's intending to surprise everyone!) and I believe that Loving Hut have desserts. Of course, should anyone want to place an order with you, that's fine too :-) I wish we could get Nitin Mehta to join us on Meetup/Volentia, I'm sure I sent him an invite once... (Funnily, I've got a tab with Shambhu's contact details open on my browser, just hadn't gotten around to contacting you yet)

No idea Lesley, perhaps Shyam knows, why not contact him via Volentia (He's listed on the events)...

    August 23, 2011

  • Lesley D.

That is such sad news, do you know if she is opening up elsewhere or leaving the restaurant business or retiring?

    August 22, 2011

  • Richard Ⓥ M.

Shyam (co-owner of Karma) kindly sent me the following update -

"Regarding Veggie Inn...Lin closed on Saturday...I called for a take away Saturday night and she told me that it was her last day as she had sold the place. It had been going thru about 6 months and finally went thru. It's sadly not going to be a pure veg place any longer."

    August 22, 2011

  • Richard Ⓥ M.

Just spoken to Gavin, at Loving Hut Edgeware, who has booked us for 20-30 people from 6pm on Saturday.

The 186 bus takes about 30 minutes from the Wetherspoons (Harrow Town Centre/Sheepcote Road - Stop R) to Loving Hut (Edgware - Stop G), with a few minutes walk each end, for those joining us for a drink beforehand.

I will email Barry again to find out what is happening, he said he would contact you and I told him he has to reply on the event page which he so far appears to have not done. We're OK with Sakonis, in fact Paul actually prefers it to Veggie Inn as he is more fond of Indian than Chinese food anyway, and at Sakonis there is the choice. Sorry to hear the Veggie Inn are causing you so many problems, I am very disappointed in them really since you checked ages ago. Way to go to lose customers!!

    August 21, 2011

  • Richard Ⓥ M.

Okay, found a review of Yummy V and clearly it's not suitable anyway, as they're now only takeaway... shame, as it sounded good.
    http://www.bozzograo.net/littleworld/tag/restaurant-review/
If Sakonis goes horribly wrong, however, it looks like we'll be heading up the road!

    August 21, 2011

  • Richard Ⓥ M.

Being unable to get hold of Yummy V, I've tentatively booked Sakonis. Don't know if that buffet is good value, seems pricey, I've asked Rishika (who likes Sakonis) if she can share any experience she's had of it.

Also, they seemed vague, saying that if we went at 6pm we'd have no choice but the buffet, but if we went at 6.30 or 5.30 we could choose off the menu too! I suggested some of us could start early, with others arriving later :-)

    August 19, 2011

  • Richard Ⓥ M.

No word from Barry, that I've seen, yet Lesley.

    August 19, 2011

  • Richard Ⓥ M.

Been trying to find out more on Yummy V (http://www.yummyv.co.uk/) but, as usual, no-one is answering the 'phone...

    August 19, 2011

  • Richard Ⓥ M.

Grrrrr! I couldn't raise Veggie Inn on the 'phone so left a message (as advised) confirming numbers. Finally got hold of them tonight, only to be told they'll be closed, as they're on holiday for 2 weeks. I can't believe it. When I originally spoke to them weeks ago, and made a tentative booking, I confirmed they'd definitely be open. Rang Sakonis who have a buffet at £13.20(!) and Chinese options which could be veganised (http://www.sakonis.co.uk/menu.pdf - prices now higher) if we go earlier.

    August 19, 2011

  • Lesley D.

Did someone called Barry Graham contact you? He contacted me about coming to this, I told him he had to reply as a yes on the event page I told him this was ESSENTIAL but I still do not see him on here as replying.. sorry I am away on holiday, intermittently online on Paul's laptop, we were out on a walk when you rang me, so I was not really in a frame of mind to think about things back home, but we intend on all coming to Harrow the whole day.

    August 18, 2011

  • Richard Ⓥ M.

NB. ANYONE EXTRA WANTING TO ATTEND PLEASE MESSAGE ME AS VEGGIE INN HAS BEEN BOOKED.

    August 18, 2011

  • Richard Ⓥ M.

RSVPing to one of the 3 listings (Volentia, London Vegetarian and Vegan Meetups) is enough, I'll just combine them all.

In future, whilst I'll advertise any events that need booking on all, I'll ask everyone to RSVP on the Vegan Meetup.

As I don't normally arrange things that need booking, preferring to keep it relaxed, I forgot to do that for Veggie Inn this time.

    August 18, 2011

  • Richard Ⓥ M.

I'm booking this today, do please ensure your RSVP is correct. Cheers.

    August 18, 2011

  • Richard Ⓥ M.

Well done, I'll make a computer nerd out of you yet Lesley ;-p

    July 29, 2011

  • Lesley D.

My head almost went pop, but I think both have been corrected now.

    July 29, 2011

  • Lesley D.

Sorry I am getting confused now, how do I do this?

    July 29, 2011

  • Lesley D.

Sorry I am going to try uploading the html thing you sent me for this event and the lunchtime one. I just was not sure how to but your recent message might have helped. Anyway we shall see if it works or not..

    July 29, 2011

  • Richard Ⓥ M.

I prefer to avoid booking wherever possible, especially with my events that include several places, so people can come and go as they please.

    July 29, 2011

  • Richard Ⓥ M.

I think that, whilst I'll post future events, that require booking, across all sites, I'll point everyone to Vegan Meetup to RSVP, otherwise it makes everything confusing and unfair...

    July 29, 2011

  • Richard Ⓥ M.

As the dinner is limited to 30 seats (well, that's what Veggie Inn said the maximum booking was!), and it started on Volentia, I'm allocating 16 seats to Volentia, with 7 allocated to here and 7 for the Vegan Meetup, should this become oversubscribed.

That said, 4 people (inc. 2 guests) on here are also on Volentia.
