New Orleans is one of the most superstitious communities with the majority of the population being Catholic, and a large part being Jewish.  Mardi Gras, meaning fat Tuesday, the day before Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent, which is the beginning of the 40+ days leading to Easter.  All Catholic tradition.  Most of the celebrations in New Orleans are rooted in superstitious characters, including many "Saints" of which the football team is named.  When the team's owner, John Mecom, decided he wanted to name the leagues' football team the "Saints", he went directly to Archbishop Phillip M. Hannan to ask for his permission.  Halloween, the day before All Saint's Day, when locals deliver flowers to their loved ones buried in the cemeteries.  St. Patrick's Day?  Leprechauns!! And green jello shots?  Whenever you decide to party in New Orleans, you may want to do a little digging to find out what superstitious notion triggered the celebration hundreds of years ago.  Superstitions are as real to the majority of the population just as real as the air you breath.

Most of the trade in New Orleans came up through the Caribbean with many of the slaves, including those from Africa and from Haiti, bringing with them their superstitious beliefs.  New Orleans and it's rich culture is rooted in superstition.  It is this "spirit of New Orleans" that brings the locals together to celebrate our rich traditions in this present-day life.
