**Come any time between 6pm and 9pm. Stay as long as you want, or leave when you need to.**
How better to start your weekend than sipping a cocktail amongst your fellow vegetarian & vegan friends at the posh cafe/bar K2 Lounge at the beautiful Rubin Museum of Art! This beautiful evening is free - no admission charge. (There is a charge of course for drinks.)
We'll also have free admission to the galleries of Rubin Museum showing the largest Western collection of religious art from cultures of the Himalayan mountain range, including those of Nepal, Tibet, and Bhutan as well as the interrelated traditions of India, Mongolia, and China.
There will be a live DJ, and 2-for-1 drink specials from 6 to 7pm.
From the New York Times: "Every Friday, before the sky goes black, the lights go down in the lobby cafe of the Rubin Museum of Art, which fills the old Barneys building at Seventh Avenue and 17th Street. Keeping with the museum's focus on the culture of the Himalayas, a gong sits on the floor next to a table where the D.J. spins a soothing mix of Eastern-inflected trance rhythms punctuated by soft jazz and bass-heavy world music. Small tables are set with electric candles that flicker a shifting display of turquoise, purple, blue, red and green."
The New York Times, continued: "Bartenders and waitresses wearing T-shirts and the occasional ski hat create a kind of ski-bum hipster chic as they serve specialty cocktails like the Mantra-tini (vodka, pomegranate and other liqueurs, litchi) alongside shumai and curried shrimp."
The New York Times, continued: "On any given Friday, when the cafe becomes the moody K2 Lounge, named for the world's second-highest mountain, older couples in flannel and tweed mingle with younger visitors in expensive heels and cuffed designer jeans, while the occasional business executive enjoys a cocktail in the company of a BlackBerry."
And at 9:30pm with a $7 or more bar purchase you can enjoy the movie Clue in the Cabaret Cinema for free. (Clue: 1985 starring Eileen Brennan, Tim Curry, and Madeline Kahn) Did I mention that you can have a drink while enjoying the flick?
Collections at the Rubin Museum:
The Rubin Museum of Art has the largest Western collection of religious art from cultures of the Himalayan mountain range, including those of Nepal, Tibet, and Bhutan as well as the interrelated traditions of India, Mongolia, and China. The Himalayas are the highest mountains in the world and form an imposing geographical barrier. This has created a cultural threshold between the region and the other great cultures of Asia, allowing for the flourishing of distinctly Himalayan artistic traditions. The museum's collection is primarily made up of scroll paintings (thangka) and sculptures form the region, but also includes a wide variety of artifacts, such as masks, textiles, and illuminated manuscripts.
Our event runs from 6:00pm to 9:00pm. Feel free to arrive at anytime. That said, we appreciate your arriving as close to 6:00pm as is practical for you.
With all the wonderful vegetarians and vegans who attend each of our events, every event we do is liked by our members, but our "Veg Night Out!" events are the most popular of all. People enjoy the fact they can mingle (speak with lots of different people), and they love the beautiful venues that we go to. Join us for a stellar evening of lively conversation and lovely surroundings with fellow vegetarians and vegans.
For our new members: this is an incredibly friendly and welcoming group. We'll have our own section in the club, and you can get to know all our wonderful members.
Where To Find Our Group: We will be the large group that is near the DJ. Just look for the DJ, and you'll see our large group there. Pretty much everyone near the DJ will be us.
Come join us at the K2 Lounge / Cafe Serai at the Rubin Museum of Art. Look forward to seeing you!
