Chinese Lunar New Year Parade Celebration

Come celebrate the Chinese Lunar New Year with us! It will be the year 4012, the year of the Horse. We’ll start the fun at my favorite dim sum restaurant in Chinatown.

It would be hard pressed to find a vegetarian restaurant devoted to dim sum. But we are fortunately to have one right in our own Downtown Chinatown - Vegetarian Dim Sum House!

Vegetarian Dim Sum House has many many delicacies. The variety of them, with their different flavors, both sweet and salty, is amazing! Almost everything is vegan, just ask the staff. I can make recommendations for the newbies to this restaurant.  It worked out great when we did this in April of last year when we did the Chinatown temple tour.

We start eating right after sitting down at 11:00 AM and finish around 12:45 PM. After brunch, for those interested, we will go find an area for us to watch the parade, which starts at 1:00 pm. There will be lion dances, dragon puppets, floats, martial artists, and lots of other festivities.

New York Magazine Critic’s Pick: “More than 5,000 participants fill Chinatown's streets with wildly colored dragon puppets manned by martial artists, floats, music, traditional food, and dancing, all in celebration of the Chinese lunar New Year.”

We will finish at 5pm so that many of us will have time to go watch the Super Bowl with a guestimated kickoff time at 6:30pm.

For those of you who have never attended one of our Meetup events: this is an incredibly friendly & welcoming group. You will have the option of ordering with others, sharing, and splitting the bill, or just order for yourself and get your own check. Easy!

Whether you are sharing with others and splitting the bill, or getting your own food and your own check, please bring cash to pay your check (not a credit card). Thanks!

Where to meet our group: We'll be meeting in Vegetarian Dim Sum House, in the basement. Please ask the waitstaff to direct you to the basement room.

Looking forward to a delicious brunch and a fun day at the parade! Hope to see you there!

Eddie

Many of you sitting at the pre-ordered tables had asked me for the names of the pre-ordered dim sums. Those were my fav dishes at this restaurant. FYI: veg mock shrimp, monk dumplings, steamed glutinous rice wrap in lotus leaves, treasure balls, turnip cake fried, rice flour roll with mushroom, mushroom pan fries noodles, and green veggie dish (this dish name I cannot recall, I picked it out of the main menu book). Enjoy!

What a treat to be able to eat vegan dim sum! It was a delight to meet all the wonderful new members who attended today, as well as hang out with all our amazing regulars. And it was a fantastic to see the New Year parade. Huge thanks to Eddie for his expert organizing and tremendously gracious hosting. Also, thank you very much Eddie for the Buddhist temple tour you offered to those who stayed till the end of the parade.

    • David G.

Hi Dolma! Welcome to our group. Happy to have you as a member! The way our group works (and how all meetup groups work) is that you must rsvp in order to attend an event. You are not rsvp'd for this event, so at present you may not attend. Also, this particular event is full, and if you do rsvp, you will be placed on the waiting list. Once you are on the waiting list, you may only attend if you do get moved up to the regular rsvp list. I just responded to Niurka with an explanation about the waiting list, you may want to read that post as well. I know you are a new member, and this can be a little confusing. Here are some things to keep in mind: Our group is large, and our events usually fill up quickly. In order to successfully rsvp for an event, it is best to rsvp when the event is first put up. You will get an email notice each time we put up a new event. Dolma, sorry for the long post, and welcome to the group! Looking forward to meeting you soon.
