Veg Night Out! - Rooftop Drinks at 230 Fifth

“230 Fifth” is a plush lounge located on the 20th floor of the building formerly known as the Victoria Hotel in the Flatiron District of Manhattan. It consists of two floors with 8,000 sq. ft of enclosed space and a magnificently landscaped 14,000 sq. ft rooftop garden. It is the largest rooftop garden in Manhattan. You’ll be in love with the great views of the city this venue has to offer of the Empire State Building, Chrysler Buildings, Statue of Liberty, and Hudson River.

What better way to beat the heat than to cool down with drinks while inhaling the spectacular view from the rooftop at 230 Fifth! Due to popular request, we are gathering for a well-deserved drinks night to mix and mingle with new and old friends!

It's a New York Magazine's Critics' Pick.  Here's what New York Magazine says about this lovely venue:

The staid marble lobby of the office building that was formerly the Victoria Hotel does little to prepare one for the scene on the 20th floor: If the 8,000-square foot room pimped out in walls of partitioned glass, dark op-art pile carpet, and purple fluorescent lights recalls Studio 54, it's because the owner, art collector Steven Greenberg, has spared no expense in making it as lavish as his previous projects, the Roxy and the Palladium. The Sue et Mare couch came from Karl Lagerfeld's collection, and a maze of other low-to-the-ground loungers such as a kiss-shaped velour loveseat are similarly flamboyant. The skyline twinkles beyond floor-to-ceiling windows framed by white curtains, but the scene is even more impressive on the massive roof deck where an endless array of wood benches and sturdy garden chairs invite no less than 500 quitting-timers and night owls to take in unobstructed views of the Empire State Building to the north, the Met Life building to the east, and Jersey to the west. As the palm trees rustle and the old-fashioned cocktails kick in, you can easily imagine Don Johnson landing his helicopter near the stuffed zebra and cruising for foxy investment bankers.

From the Zagat Nightlife guide:

There's lots of "scene and scenery" to be had at this "commanding" duplex near Madison Square, voted Most Popular nightspot in NYC; its "giant" "greenery"-lined foof deck with "killer views" of the Empire State Building draws "throngs" of "flirty corporate" who ignore the "sky-high" tabs and penthouse level that looks "like something out of Scarface"; even though some of the crowd seems to be "auditioning for the Jersey Shore", this one's "magical" on a summer night, and it's even accessible in winter thanks to "robes and heat lamps."

Here's a great reference site for vegan beer, wine, and other liquor: http://www.barnivore.com (Wish they had an app... *sigh*)

How To Find Our Group at 230 Fifth: After entering the front door to 230 Fifth Avenue, you will be directed to an elevator to the 20th Floor (Penthouse level).  In the Penthouse you'll see a staircase to the roof.  On the roof, look for the sign: "NYC Vegetarian and Vegan Meetup".  That is our section.

Come relax and imbibe drinks (alcoholic or virgin, however you like 'em) after work with us at 230 Fifth! Cheers!

Wow! What a view! What a venue! Breathtaking and chic! What a lovely gathering of vegetarians -- new members and regular members. Huge thanks to my co-conspirator, Jade, for her great work on this event. And big thanks to Sarah at 230 Fifth for her excellent and very helpful coordination of this gathering.

I noticed predictions for thunderstorms. will the meetup be canceled if this happens?

    August 19, 2012

Actually, according to weather.com, it is unlikely to rain tomorrow night. But in the unlikely event of nighttime rain, the party will simply be held in the enlosed, beautiful 8,000-square-foot penthouse pictured above. (The second of the four photos in the Meetup description.) - David

this will be my first event! does it have any dress code? casual's ok?

    August 10, 2012

    • David G.

You should dress up a bit for this event. Anywhere from "business casual" on the casual side, to suits for men and dresses for women on the formal side. It will probably be too hot to wear a tie or a business suit. But men should dress up in either a nice polo shirt or a buttoned-down business shirt. Women may feel most comfortable wearing a dress, that is what most women will be wearing. The weather will be warm so wear something you can stay cool in while still being dressy. This event is more dressy than most of the events we go to. We are going to a "see and be seen" lounge, and it is one of the best in New York.

We should use this group to influence places we grace to include more vegetarian options into the menu.

    August 10, 2012

  • Sassee and G.

will there be food or appetizers?

    August 9, 2012

  • Jade

Regarding Ratna's question, the bar menu is quite extensive, so I've provided a link to barnivore.com to check whether the drink you wish to order is vegan.

I haven't been able to make any of these due to work but am definitely going to make it to this one! I am bringing my vegan friend with me. Neither of us know very many vegan/vegetarians so hopefully this will fix that :)

    August 9, 2012

    • Jade

Definitely! With the rsvp's rolling in, I'm sure you going to meet lots. Look forward to seeing you there!

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
