Hello Emma,
I can't speak for everyone or for the current organizer Andreas, but my feeling is that all who share an interest in our goal to provide a supportive environment for our decision to raise our children vegan or vegetarian should be welcome. We already have so many people in the world telling us not to raise children exclusively veg*n, that it is important, I believe, to have a place where we can feel supported, understood and where our children will hear and see the positive results of our decision to be vegan or vegetarian for the animals, our bodies and the environment, among many other reasons. While it is important to be able to argue the many positive aspects of veg*nism with others, I think that this group (again, I am speaking from my own belief here) is looking for a place where we can simply "be" and have fun with our kids with the assumption that others in the group will support us. It sounds like you are looking for a group to create community with and that you are not judgemental about our ideas and in fact support them. I also breastfeed my three year old and she is not vaccinated, etc. These values sometimes (though not always, of course) coincide with the decision to raise children veg*n. I am excited about our group! As far as I am concerned (though I am just one member among many), welcome!
Teresa

Hi Teresa,
I share your thoughts on the importance of community amongst like minded parenting. I too have a child turning 3yrs, & another on the way. But I should mention on the onset that we have now decided to give our children poultry. Albeit organic but we are feeding her chicken, turkey, fish & eggs. But we are a bit unconventional in our choice to not vaccinate, have a homebirth & nurse for around 2yrs. All have proved to be great decisions as our daughter is a grounded, lovely child who has never had a cold never mind been "sick". But before I share further, I just want to make sure my joining your group isn't violating any conditions since we are occassionally meat eaters-along with avocodo, beets, kale, bean, veggie juices & all the deliciousness one can find at Caravan of Dreams :)

Kindly respond to let me know if it would be ok if I were able to be apart of your growing community. I have amazing friends but only a few who are raising their children with a certain awareness, etc.

With gratitude,
Emma

Hello Andreas and all!
I was the previous organizer and started the Veg Parent's Group because I had been in NYC for a few months and wanted my daughters to meet and get to know other veg*n children to play with, celebrate special occasions with (veg*n birthday parties, holidays, vacations, etc). I think it is also very important for parents to get to know each other and have each other's support in the process of raising veg*n kids in a sometimes not so veg*n friendly world. My kids love Zen Burger, playing in all of NYC's great parks, museums, friendly and large veg*n potlucks, playdates, animals, trips to Farm Sanctuary and camping, etc...! I am VERY glad that Andreas stepped up to rescue this group and hope that his words will ignite the fire needed to get people moving in the direction of making this great group a reality. I have already met many dear and wonderful people through the group with whom I meet privately for playdates and most recently, for my 3-year old's birthday. I'd love to see potlucks (they are less expensive, there is recipe-sharing, we meet in each other's homes creating more of a bonding experience and our kids can be comfortable) and any other event that is organized. My family will be sure to participate! My best to all the members,
Teresa Nunes

Hi everyone!

I hope everyone's well. I'm a a father of a wonderful 6-year old boy and NEEEED him to have more veg*n friends. Yes, that's our picture (plus JJ the sheep) 2 years ago. I had veg*n friends when I was growing up veg and it made a huge difference in my perspective. I am just finishing recovering from a lot of work on the recent political campaigns and I'm ready to help us revitalize this really important group.

I 'rescued' this group as the previous organizer (in my words) was not seeing progress in the group actually getting together and the group making it a priority to do so (this included me). So I became organizer and am currently paying the meetup bills so we keep the 35-ish members we have and move forward. That's fine, I really really want this to work. I couldn't begin this revitalization push until now because of the campaigns ... now is the time. Please jump into this with me and everyone else for our kids.

Please respond to the questions at the bottom. As I see it,

  • Our kids need veg*n kid-friends so they have support and acceptance
  • WE could use ever-more of the same for ourselves
  • We could also use some help/tips/suggestions on various veg*n-kids-in-this-world topics

Thus, we need this group and we need it's members to be much more active and numerous than we all are now (definitely including myself in this group).

WHAT DO YOU THINK??? please email the group (hit reply) so we share and know we're alive!
VEG*N PARENTS & KIDS MATTER RIGHT?!?

  • How can we make this a priority so we actually get the veg*n kids/parents community we want???
  • How do we each recruit 1-2 veg*n parents here so we build the community???
  • What should we do??? Outings? Indoor? Pot-lucks? WHATEVER?

Wishing peace, compassion. love, & joy!
Andreas
