Kennilworth ~ Arboretum Tour

  • Apr 7, 2013 · 8:30 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

Just in time for the awakening of Spring Season: a ride to two of Washington's natural and hidden gems: the Kennilworth Aquatic Garden and the National Arboretum.  The Kennilworth Aquatic Garden, located in the far eastern section of the city features the largest collection of water lilies and marshlands.  While the peak season is actually in August, there should be plenty of blooming action to please the visual senses.  The second leg of the tour proceeds to the National Arboretum which features many individual botanical exhibitions such as the Azalea Garden, Bonsai Collections Capitol Columns and more.  If the green stuff doesn't excite you, the nearly empty roads of the park should provide enough of a joyride to make the early wake up time worth it.  More information can be viewed at the links below.

Many thanks to all you great folks who came out yesterday. Your company was enjoyed and greatly appreciated. The ride will be rescheduled again later in the season to capitalize on the peak period of Kennilworth Gardens. Until then, I look forward to seeing everyone sooner.

A conflict came up for the morning, too bad - I might try to get over there in the afternoon, I've never seen the cherry blossoms bloom at the arboretum!

Greetings All. This event is now closed any new reservations and the participation list has been enlarged to accommodate the folks on the Wait List. Ride details will be emailed later in the week but please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

Andrea and Jenn. This ride is meant to be more 'leisure' than our regular rides. While I won't promise no hill climbing(especially Ft Dupont and the Arboretum itself), we will remain together for the duration of the ride.

I ran Hains point on March 29th. BARELY 1/20 trees in bloom almost all of them the younger trees. Alexandria has quite a few trees in bloom but nothing to call for a true Japanese peak bloom viewing party. I'm excited about crashing this ride Gregg! How's your knee holding up?

    April 1, 2013

    • Gregg

Thanks for asking. I'm wearing a knee brace that allows me to commute to work but will continue to take things slowly. No wheelies or showing off. . Theoretically, the Arboretum's Azalea Garden should start blooming in numbers in the next few days but we'll see soon.

A couple quick notes about this event: 1) Bring your walking shoes or at minimum cleat covers. We will spend extended time at walking around Kenilworth and the Arboretum. 2) Bring some brunch money. We'll look for good eating spot somewhere in Eastern Market at rides end. Please let me know if you have any questions.

The Cherry Blossom Ten Miler is the same morning, so factor that in when considering how to get to Eastern Market: http://www.cherryblossom.org/course/course.htm

    • Gregg

Thanks Claudia. I had not considered that in scheduling but the route completely avoids the 10 miler. The good news is that Metro should open earlier than normal to accommodate the runners.

The hill climbing training series are too fast for me. I do not like to be dropped off. Do you have similar 'No Drop' training for slow bikers?

Hey Greg, is this the one we talked about today? I will save the date.
