VeloDCity Challenge - Ride #4 - Fredericksburg Spotsylvania Tour 60 mi, 2100 ft

NOTE: Give yourself plenty of time to get down to Fred'burg from DC area b/c of typical I-95 traffic headed south on weekends, even early in the AM, by way of example it tells me its an hr from Arlington but easily takes hr 15

Completely new ride this year as we take in a little history of the Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania area of Virginia.

Finding a good start w/parking was difficult for this ride so highly recommend carpooling if possible as park lot is not too large. If lot is full there is some street parking on streets around park as well as a public garage at corner of Sophia & Wolfe (2 blocks from start). Just remember if you have bike on roof to not enter garage with it still there.

NOTE: A LIABILITY WAIVER WILL NEED TO BE SIGNED BEFORE THE RIDE - If you don't sign one you will not be allowed to participate in the ride - I will have waivers at the ride start.

This ride of 60 miles is relatively flat by my standards, a couple rollers here and there but nothing too taxing.  This will be a B to A paced ride and will likely break up into smaller groups.  We will ride a lollipop loop from Fredericksburg south into Spotsylvania.

Shortly after starting we will ride past the Sunken Road/Stone Wall area of the Fredericksburg Battlefield.  Here over 8,000 Union soldiers were wounded or killed trying unsucessfully to take this hill.  If you have time post ride I recommend you stop by the Visitor Center here and take the 1/2 mile walk around to learn a little more.

We will then continue through the southern portion of the battlefield and make our way through the forests and farmlands of the county.  At mile 15.5 we will reach Guinea Station and the Stonewall Jackson Shrine.  Here is where Stonewall Jackson died after being shot by his own men during the Battle of Chancellorsville.  Feel free to take a quick break and walk around.

We will then head west, crossing I-95 and hit our 1st rest stop at mile 22.  Its then onto Spotsylvania Courthouse and at mile 32 the Spotsylvania Battlefield.  We ride for about 3 miles through the battlefield.   Over a two week period in 1864 the two armies fought over this land, at a cost of 28,000 casualties, with some of the most intense fighting of the war occurring at the Mule Shoe/Bloody Angle.  Here, for more then 20 hrs, through pouring rain the armies engaged, often in hand-to-hand fighting.

Once through the battlefield we start our journey back east, through Massaponax, stopping at our 2nd rest stop at mile 42 and then continue back through Fredericksburg Battlefield and loop through the town of Fredericksburg and back to the start.

We will be right downtown Fredericksburg @ ride end so we can find a place to eat post ride for those that want to.

Pace: Medium: 15-18 mph avg; call it a B/A ride

Next year my Velo Challenge goal will be to hang w/ Matt long enough to benefit from his rolling history lesson. This year, I'm thankful for the gorgeous route and great company. Another excellent ride, all around. Thanks, Matt!

How long, realistically, do you expect this ride to take? I've got the be on the road heading south by five at the latest, and might have to bail early depending on the time...

Hey... I'm one of those carfree guys and would love to catch a ride with someone. Live in Old Town and can easily meet someone coming down I-395 at Shirlington.
