VeloDCity Challenge - Ride w/o Matt - 33 miles 4000 ft

NOTE: A LIABILITY WAIVER WILL NEED TO BE SIGNED BEFORE THE RIDE - If you don't sign one you will not be allowed to participate in the ride - I will have waivers at the ride start.

This ride is meant for those that like to climb as we will be covering approximately 4,000 ft of climbing over 33 miles.  Consider it a B/A ride.  There will be 4 primary climbs:

Shookstown, Gambrill, Harp Hill, and Coxey Brown

The start is at the parking lot of Frederick Town Mall if Frederick MD.  The nearest intersection is Route 40 and Waverley.  Address is above.  There is NO water or restroom facilities along the route, so plan accordingly.  There is one at the start/finish.

While not mandatory it is highly recommended that if you attend this ride that you have previously attended one of prior rides (so you know exactly what you are signing up for - idea of amount of climbing, pace, ride grouping, etc).  This ride is not for the flatlanders but rather for the person that likes to climb, and climb, and climb....

Please note that due to the amount of climbing & distance this ride will naturally split apart.  Hopefully everyone will be able to keep in smaller groups but if you plan on riding you must be comfortable riding alone (i.e. self sufficient) as most areas are very rural with limited/no cell phone service.

Major climbs

Climb 1 - Shookstown, 2.3 miles, 13% peak*, 706 ft., 307 ft./mile

Climb 2 - Gambrill Park, 1.5 miles, 10% peak*, 574 ft., 383 ft.mile

Climb 3 - Harp Hill, 1.2 miles, 13% peak*, 540 ft., 450 ft./mile

Climb 4 - Coxey Brown, 1.9 miles, 16% peak*, 955 ft., 503 ft./mile

*data from RidewithGPS which underestimates peaks

Total distance:approx 33 miles

Total elevation climbed: approx 4,000 feet

Pace: about 14 avg mph (including CLIMBING, not avg mph on a flat course) Category B/B+ ride

Terrain: hills, hills, and more hills - lots of up, lots of down

Word of caution - while climbing is difficult, there is more risk descending so you should be comfortable descending at speed.  There will be long descents, with traffic, some road will be narrow and/or with some technical cornering involved. Know your skill and comfort level when descending.

The route/cue sheet can be viewed at the link below (subject to change):

http://ridewithgps.com/routes/4786665

I will NOT have cue sheets; familiarize yourself with the ride route prior to the ride as the group will split up.

- HELMETS ARE REQUIRED FOR PARTICIPATION

- WAIVERS WILL NEED TO BE SIGNED AT THE RIDE START - NO WAIVER - NO RIDE

ID, spare tube, tools to repair flats, are required (you should be able to change you own tires).
- Snacks and liquids can be purchased at the rest stops.
- The event will be cancelled/postponed if it rains.
- Email me if you have any questions

Colin, thanks for quickly pulling this ride together yesterday. I stayed on cue until about mile 19 at which point my higher priority was to make it back to the car on my own power. If I try this ride again it will be on my Rockhopper with super granny gears and slicks.

Great to see you guys, and thx Collin (I think) for doing this. Just think I could have been in Philly watching the pros do the wall....but this was much better. Great route by the way, think I could have missed Coxey.

Sorry to have missed it. We were on the way to Mt. Weather when we saw the Mattless option. We had beautiful riding weather and Mt. Weather too.

ATTENTION - THURMONT RIDE CANCELED. I woke up quite sick, aches, sneezing, sore throat, the works. Barely can get around so unfortunately I'm in no condition to lead the ride today. Will look to reschedule at a later date.

Thx Matt usually its 39x27 unless its in the mts for 100+ don't really like the compact used it at 6 gaps

    May 30, 2014

  • bud

Yo Matt, what's the gear? compact? 27cog? thx Done the civil war last 10-12yrs so just a reference please, thx

    Bud

    May 29, 2014

    • Matt

Bud - gearing is a personal choice so depends on what you are comfortable with going uphill. See description of climbs in ride info. Climbs are similar to what is on CWC. If you ride a compact 27 on CWC in past then I think you'd be fine with that here
