The Civil War Century

Join us for the 12th Annual Civil War Century. Registration now open, limited to 1600 riders.

103, 75, 62, 50 and 25 mile rides of varying lumpiness, taking in 3 Civil War battlefields including Gettysburg, Antietam and South Mountain, this is one of THE premier Century events in the Nation.

Details at this website http://www.civilwarcentury.com/ and register with Active.com. They are charging a modest $35 for this event. That's $150 cheaper than your average Gran Fondo, for which you get all the beautiful mountain roads you can find East of the Rockies.

THIS is what all the South, Mid and North Catoctin training rides were for.  Hope to see VeloDCity members at the start, on the road, at the rest stops and at the finish. This year I'm doing the Full Century.

Note: actual meeting point is across the street from the Thurmont Community Park. Don't park in the Commnity Park, but in the field provided opposite.

Not bad considering the weather - disappointed to not get to the Gettysburg part (and to get so few pics due to my phone battery dying), but after taking an unintended 10 mile detour before hiding from the weather under a bridge, the bail out was the right option. Ted and Brooke - I enjoyed the company on the drive to and from - thanks for driving Ted.

Loved it! Profile and route was executed great, Staff were friendly, food and drink supply was plenty and the neon road marks was a cool Idea.

Tough ride! Tried to beat the storm but got slammed in the last two miles!!

Started a 7:30 AM, and (forgoing the bailout) managed to get past the Fairfield Rest Stop before the storm hit. Rode it out with three other cyclists on the front porch of a local resident. The ride through Gettysburg Battlefield was memorable. Finished the Century at about 3:30 PM, averaging 14.5 mph over the entire course.

I took the 65 mile bailout after Raven Rock, thinking I was a it wimpy. Then a mile and half before the finish the skies opened up. So the Bailout was the right thing to do. 72 miles in all completed, including all the big mountains.

Great metric century route to Gettysburg. Has some hills and it was windy today.

I had a great time. I did the 63 mile route. Rode with Colin and Micheal after the 2nd rest stop. But, didn't see any of the other group members. Finished the Metric about 15 minutes before the rain started.

Note - After reading Stephen's warning of the thunderstorms, this one came in from Arlington County - looks like it could be just like the end of the Coxey climb - good motivation to arrive early and pedal fast!

The National Weather Service reports the possibility of severe thunderstorms with damaging winds for the entire Metropolitan Area on Saturday, September 8th. The storm is expected in the afternoon hours. Beware of your surroundings and monitor local media for additional information. dlp/oem

I was able to get Rachel's registration transferred. I was wondering if there was a time and location the group would be meeting ?

    This just in:

"Heads-up for those of you doing the CWC on Saturday. There is a huge all-day event (Tough Mudder) at Crumland Farm on Saturday. Crumland Farm is on Rte 15, so traffic on 15 may be bad in both directions. It appears that there are close to 20,000 people registered for the Saturday TM. I believe the first "wave" starts at 8am, so plan your drive to Thurmont accordingly."

So you would be prudent to either get to Thurmont well before 8am, or alternatively take Woodsboro Pike (Route 550) instead of Route 15.

Stephen - So out of Fredrick, you would take 26 to 194 to 550? Any idea if the tough mudder will interfere with the Century Route?

Given the time to drive up there, my plan is to try to get there at around 7AM but not actually start riding until 7:30 or so

If Ritchie is still on the cue sheet I'll can that and do Raven Rock instead, picking up back at Sabillasville.

I am also shooting for an arrival around 7 AM. Not sure how long its going to take me to finish. Are folks going to try to gather at the start?
