Weather go Naked

It's time to do Mount Weather again, taking in also Naked Mountain on the 55 mile loop from Marshall, VA up to Airmont Country Store, then Bluemont, up and over Mt Weather and its brake smoking descent, Naked Mountain and its vineyard we won't be sampling, then back on the eponymous Route 55 to Marshall.

Mt Weather is a Wuthering Height: we go from 100 metres above sea level to 600 metres above sea level in the space of 10 miles. We go from 600 metres asl to 100 metres asl in just a few miles after that. Don't ask to do it in the opposite direction.

The most important 'bring' is about 2 litres of liquid. That's about 2 bottles and a camelback. You will also need a road bike with good light wheels, and secure clipping arrangements about the pedals. This is absolutely not a beginner's ride. Mountain bikes and hybrids strictly verboten. If you need to ask whether you can do a 55 mile ride in July heat with 1,000 metres of climbing, then this ride is not for you. The only feasible fluid pickup en-route is at the Airmont Country Store, after only the first dozen miles. Otherwise you're dragging yer tongue to the finish at Marshall. It will be at least a 4 hour ride, so the earlier we start, the less we have to deal with mid-afternoon heat.

Since we start in Marshall, VA, 36 miles from the I-66 Beltway interchange, we have to drive and/or car-pool to this one. We'll use the comments section to solicit and offer rides. It's notionally billed as an 8:30 start - that's the ride start from Marshall. I'd really like to start at 8am, and I'm soliciting opinions on that as well. Later than 8:30 is just not advisable.

Hope I haven't put off too many ambitious grimpeurs. RSVP for yourself. Surprise guests are not encouraged, let them sign up for themselves.

Ok, so Stephen did tell us not to merge into the left lane of I-66 on our bikes, but would we listen..................

    1. Good ride organization
    2. Good vibe among the riders, well-matched skill levels.
    3. Not too far of a drive from DC.
    4. Good scenery and varied terrain.
    5. The weather held.

I really enjoyed the ride today! But for the brief and terrifying detour onto I-66, it was a great parcours. And the weather was surprisingly cooperative. It was a pleasure meeting all of the fellow riders. I hope to see you all again soon. Thanks, Ted, for the ride and for introducing me to the Avett Bros. band.

    So? What's the plan then?

    July 22, 2012

  • Ted ".

Should we plan on the start being 9:30 instead of 8:30 unless you cancel?

    July 21, 2012

Maybe if I could time trial like Bradley Wiggins, I'd give the interstates a try. But for now, surface streets are more my speed.

Yes. Grove Lane. I've tried riding on I-66 and it was unfriendly, especially as that on-ramp delivers you into the left lane.

Here is the route adjusted to bypass hwy 66 on the southern end of the loop.

Is the park and ride lot at the North or South end of Frost St. Per google maps, looks like there is parking lot at the North end, but there also appears to be some facility there too so I'm not sure if the satellite photo is up to date.

Ted, thanks for the offer! I'll send you an email with what should be convenient coordinates. I'll share gas, of course.

@David, I'll be driving from Takoma. If you'd like, I can meet you just off 495w as I come through that area.

Look at the weather for the weekend. High is supposed to be in the 80s. Not as hot as today.

Driving from NE DC. I can haul 2 extra bikes (3 if one is a folding bike), and corresponding persons.

I would love to join you. I can give a ride to a person + bike, but keep in mind that I have a Ford Fiesta (size a golf car). I live in NW DC, can pick up within reasonable distance.

Hi Stephen, can you send me the route? I wouldn't mind driving this ahead of time to see if I can handle this ride.

    June 21, 2012

  • Stephen_N

I have a garmin gdb file for the route. Give me your email address and I'll send it to you.
