Catoctin Ridger - 63-65 miles - 6,500 - 7,000 feet of climbing

  • Aug 5, 2012 · 8:30 AM

Back by popular demand, with an altered route covering new climbs like Hamburg Road, Ft Ritchie Rd, and for the brave, Coxey Brown, as well some beloved regulars like Wolfsville and Rocky Ridge/Foxville. This ride is for those that like to climb, and climb, and climb, and climb....

Due to the amount of climbing it is strongly recommended that riders signing up are B caliber or higher and like to climb. This is not a beginners ride. If you've done a prior variation of the Catoctin ride or entire Civil War Century before, this will be slightly more challenging, but you should be fine.

I will be limiting the # of riders at 20 to hopefully keep the group from stringing out along the road by too much time/distance. Also, if you sign up but can't make it please change status a soon as possible so others that want to ride can be added to the list.

Just so you know what you're in for below is a summary of some of the climbs

Climb 1 - Hamburg Rd - 3.5 miles, 1030 feet elevation gain, 5.7% avg grade way
Climb 2 - long slog up Wolfsville Rd - 6.5 miles, 750 feet climbing, 2.2% avg grade
Climb 3 - Raven Rock/Ft Ritchie Rd - 2.9 miles, 850 ft climbing, 5.6% avg grade. - NOTE THIS IS ON THE CW CENTURY
Climb 4 - Rocky Ridge/Foxville Rd out of Thurmont - 4.9 miles, 900 ft climbing, 3.5% grade (although 2nd half avgs 6-8%) - NOTE ALSO ON CW CENTURY

Some steep bumps on Harps Hill Rd and Harmony Road before the last climb of the day.
Climb 5 - Coxey Brown. Shortest climb of the day at only 1.8 miles. Unfortunately its 955 feet of climbing for an avg of a 10% grade (and it felt steeper). First 1/2 mile is over 13% with sections in 16% to 24%

For those that don't want the Coxey Brown challenge there will be an alternative route from Harmony back onto Wolfsville and then the climb back up Highland School (tough climb as well but not as difficult as Coxey). This adds about another 1.5 miles to the route but with less elevation gain on the last climb.

There will be regrouping at the top of the primary climbs as well as rest stops along the way at about mile 21, mile 36 and mile 48 (if store is open- it has been in the past)

Ride Requirements
- B pace riders and above (16+ mph of flats, climbing speed will vary)
- road bikes with clip in pedals a MUST
- helmet
- tire pump, spare tubes
- Highly recommend 2 water bottles

The location start is in Frederick at the Frederick Mall parking lot - Boscov's side. It will require call pooling and is about an hour drive from DC area. Closest metro for picking up is Shady Grove (about 35 min from start).

Now that I am back from my post-ride travels I can finally post and add my blurry iphone pics for this Great ride - the first climb was a big wake up call - the last climb was humbling - I have not walked a road bike up a hill in a long time. I want revenge! (After some serious preparation, or a switch in gearing). The rollers turned to floaters in the thunderstorm at the top of the mountain was pretty hairy. I hope everyone made it down OK. Mac - good to share that trip down with you - I hope you get the rear D figured out. Andy - thanks for saving my day by having an extra helmet and letting me borrow it. Matt great job of leading - can't say we were not warned.

Does anyone have Al's contact info (I don't see him in the attendee's list)? I want to keep in touch in case he does end up heading to Cali for Levi's King Ridge Gran Fondo.

Only one word is on my mind right now and that is REDEMPTION.

I under estimated the climb and did'nt bother to prepare the gearing on my bike properly. Next time, I'll be ready! Btw, the decent was just absolutely amazing and our brake away, Man you're FAST! 30-35mph on flats? REALLY? What are you a CAT-2?

    August 6, 2012

  • Mac

Coxey Brown is awesome! I will not say No to it as I need to redeemed my self. I was not able to use my 26T on my gear otherwise I would have made it fine. I'll make sure to change my cassette to 11-28 gear by then.

Another humbling experience of riding in the Catoctin area roads. It was hot and intense and truly tested our grit. Matt did an excellent job of organizing this ride. He kept the group together and aptly led us through the toughest terrain in the area and a downpour that left us riding in a river. I look forward to a round three with Catoctin this fall.

    August 5, 2012

  • Matt

since my Garmin crapped out b/c of the downpour, does anyone from the lead group have the final stats for the trip - miles & elevation gain?

while the list was closed early this week, since there was some cancels, the wait list folks are free to join

Hmm. It's been a while I know the button wasn't obvious I had trouble for half a day try clicking anything, RSVP button on iPhone laptop (safari) was change status. If you have room and understand you might wait a bit in the afternoon I will accept your offer for a ride. Wheels down at 8:30 so we should probably get there between 8 & 8:15 to prep do you want to say start loading at 6:45?

I think you just need to hit the change status button it's under 20 riders. I could meet you in
Kensington may I ask what type of car rack do you have, is it in back or on top?

I should also mention I'm a s l o w rider with coxey in the afternoon I figure I should mention this last time I did murders row I was getting back to the parking lot after all the fast kids were home eating supper

Wish I were going but I'm in Chicago. I need training for Civil War Century!

attached is the primary route link on from the Ride with GPS web site. You should be able to also print off the cue sheet as well (I will bring some as well) http://ridewithgps.com/routes/1111611

I'll also try and create the route on mapmyride.

If there is anyone that thinks they will be doing the alternate route w/o the last Coxey Brown climb please let me know so I can get a sense of who will be riding what.
