Climbing Training Event #2 - Alexandria Hills - 36 miles - 2,300 ft

Event #2 of the Climbing Events. Hills of Alexandria - who knew there were a few

PLEASE NOTE this is meant to be a B/B+ pace ride, so a little faster/more intense than some of the other group rides.  It is also meant to be training ride. Please be aware of this before signing up. If you can not maintain an average pace (taking into account the hills) of 15-17 mph, then you may end up getting dropped.  So long as you are okay with this then I have no issue.  However, it means that you should make sure you are familiar with the route

After meandering through Old Town and along the river this ride gets going with a climb up the steep Belle View Blvd.  Then traces the GW Parkway through the neighborhoods for a loop around Fort Hunt Park before heading over to a few loops around the Hollin Hills neighborhood (and it lives up to its name).  Lots of punchy but not too long climbs. Then back through Old Town to the metro station.  We can take a detour in Old Town at the end of the ride for a bite to eat.

Please note that this is meant to be a training ride so not as recreational as some other of our Meetup rides. But also not meant to be a hammer fest. Goal is to have a nice strong effort to get some base miles in the the legs before the season begins

Total distance:approx 36 miles
Total elevation climbed: approx 2,300 feet
Pace: Medium: 15-17 mph avg (slower going up, faster going down); Category B/B+ ride
Terrain: lots of short  but steep climbs
Start/Finish: King Street Station Metro/Orange Line
Highlights: Old Town Alexandria, Potomac River, a saw tooth elevation
The route/cue sheet can be viewed at the link below:

HELMETS ARE REQUIRED FOR PARTICIPATION:
- ID, spare tube, portable tire pump, bike lock (in case of lunch) recommended

- clip in or cage pedals highly recommended
- This is a no stop ride so bring enough drink/food to get you through 33 miles - We can grab a bite in Old Town towards the end of the ride if people want
- The event will be cancelled/postponed in event of rain/snow or if it is below 30 degrees (there's only so much cold I can take)
- email me if you have any questions

Great route Matt. I got a little confused with all the route crossing and recrossing itself, but manage to hit all the climbs.

Hey Alvin! Great riding with you. Thanks Chris, but we were just getting some mileage in while searching for the right road/right cue sheet line...

That course was hard for me ride. Lots of turns and dare I say, too many hills. I needed it. Maybe will feel more comfortable next time I tackle that course. Got through it and appreciate Matt's organization and leading the chase. Met some new folks out there (Josh, Tom, Brad, Lisa) which is always nice. Used my Garmin. Wow!! I love that GPS.

Failure to follow the cue sheet closely caused a bit of confusion. Lots of turns. Unfortunately it caused the A group to get broken up a bit on the climbs. Called it a day a little early and rode up to Georgetown for lunch. I never miss a chance to hit Tackle Box.

Thanks to everybody for attending today's event, it was great to see you all. Special thanks to Matt for organizing a great event. I had a good time expanding my knowledge of the Alexandria area beyond Old Town and the Mount Vernon trail. Finally, congratulations to George, LDmay and Brad for their inaugural ride with the group. Hope you join us again soon. Until the next folks

Another great day for cycling. Thanks for the excellent route Matt. I've ridden down to Mt. Vernon many times and never ventured into those neighborhoods or Fort Hunt. Got spun around and confused few times but it was no big deal. Thanks for expanding my list of favorite routes.

Summary: I definitely needed it. I actually did enjoy it. And I didn't get dropped or lost. :) (Tom, bargaining <> whining!)

Nice route (what I actually saw of it). Great company. And I will challenge myself with the rest of those hills soon.

Thanks Matt for an excellent ride even though I cheated a little on those hills. And thanks to Gregg for being the ever affable babysitter.

I have to pull out. I am doing some bike maintenance and I needed some tools at the last minute. Since all bike stores closed at 7 tonight, I will not have my bike ready until after tomorrow.

I'll bring my other bike IF you'd like to ride it.

Hi Haider - thanks for the offer. I retired for the night before I got your message with the time change. I hope you all had a good ride - I hope to see you all at the next training event!

Also, Sunday is the first day of daylight savings time so don't forget to set your clocks forward so you won't be late!

METRORAIL WORK on Sunday - as usual the Metro is doing track work the entire weekend of the scheduled ride. For those that plan to take metro take note that the outer DC/MD stations on the Orange & Blue Lines are closed (further out then RFK/Armory station) so shuttles running to RFK/Armory. Also basically every single line has single track operations on part of their respective lines during the weekend. Please plan accordingly. More info on track work can be found on the Metro website.

How about a ride in rock creek park? There are plenty of hills on lightly traveled roads including the Mormon Temple hill, Forsythe hill, Oregon Ave., the Jr. Worlds course and the ones off of beach drive. I don't have the gps for the elevation, but can assure you that these will challenge anyone.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
