Climbing Event #5-No more Training-Catoctin- 69 miles - 7,400 +/- feet

  • April 28, 2013 · 8:30 AM

Giving everyone advance warning, I mean notice of the 1st Frederick/Catoctin ride of the year - Hopefully some will have joined in the prior Climbing Training rides to be ready for this.

Note this is a Class B/B+ ride, with significant amount of climing, including many long climbs.

Since it is the 1st Frederick ride of the year, I figured we'd start off with the old traditional ride, slightly modified to make sure we have 3 definite rest stops.

Climbing out of the gate up Shookstown & Gambrill Park, descent down Highland School, steady upgrade on Wolfsville to 1st rest stop at mile 20 (2,500+ ft already climbed).  Then the ascent of Raven Rock and descent down into Thurmont to rest stop #2 at mile 35 (3,800+ ft so far).  Then come the 6-7 mile climb of Rocky Ridge/Foxville. Up & down Stottlemyer to Harps Hill & into Myersville for 3rd rest stop at mile 53 (5,600+ ft).  Circle back to to the 3 mile Fishers Hollow/Harmony Church climb (hey at least its not Coxey Brown) to Gambrill Park.  Descend Gambrill to Route 40 and back into Frederick for a total of 69 miles and 7,200 SF of climbing.  Definitely not for the faint at heart.

- 5 primary climbs as follows:

Shooksville/Gambill at mile 1 -  4 miles, 1,200 ft

Wolfsville at mile 11 - 6 miles, 750 ft

Raven Rock at mile 22 - 3 miles, 600 ft

Rocky Ridge/Foxville at mile 36 - 6.5 miles 1,200 ft

Fishers Hollow/Highland School at mile 58 - 3 miles 1000 ft

Total distance:approx 69 miles
Total elevation climbed: approx 7,400 feet
Pace: Medium: 14-16 mph avg (climbing tends to slow one down); Category B/B+ ride, not for the novice rider.  SHould be at least at an intermediate ride skill level and be able to climb longer and steeper climbs w/o having to walk
Terrain: hilly
Start/Finish: Boscov's parking lot - Frederick Mall - 45 min/1hr from DC area - carpooling recommended.  Closest metro is Shady Grove for those that want to co-ordinate carpooling from metro
Highlights: undulating terrain, couple forested climbs, a few fast descents

The route/cue sheet can be viewed at the link below (subject to change):

- It is highly recommended, but not mandatory, that you attend at least one of the prior climbing training events.  I like to have a feel of everyone's riding pace before the ride.  While group is likely to break into smaller packs during the ride and ride is intended to be a no drop ride, given the amount of climbing it is difficult to maintain entire group together.  It is not fair to the faster riders to have to wait too long at top of the climbs.  I will have cue sheets available but it is recommended that you familiarize yourself with the ride route prior to the ride uncase the group splits.

Because of the climbing I will maintain a ride limit of 25 riders.  In the past this has allowed for group to typically finish within 20-40 minutes between front group and back group of each other

HELMETS ARE REQUIRED FOR PARTICIPATION:
- ID, spare tube, portable tire pump recommended

- clip-in/cage pedals are reqiured - too much climbing not to use all leg muscles

- road bike highly recommended.
- This ride has 3 stops but two water bottles and pocket snacks are recommended

The event will be cancelled/postponed in event of rain

It's been a busy week at work and certainly I wanted to this send sooner but thanks again to everyone involved from the organizers to all the riders. It was truly an "epic" day in the saddle. Special shout out goes to Joe, Carlos, Josh and Gregg who never got too far ahead although they could have. Very much looking forward to our next ride together.

Thanks Matt, Gregg & Stephen for putting together the great climbs, fast descents, alternate route, and for ensuring that everyone got back to the restaurant (out of the rain) in good order.

    April 29, 2013

    • Stephen_N

Hmm, am I to understand that the rain fell only on the East side of the Gambrill-Catoctin range and not on the West side? Not that I was anxious to do all the additional climbing anyway.

      April 29, 2013

    • Tom A

Well, it wasn't raining in the restaurant...

      April 29, 2013

  • Gregg

Many thanks to everybody who attended this epic sufferfest complete with hills, rain, mechanicals and mushroom hunters. Special thanks and acknowledgment goes to Matt for putting together another spectacular ride. I would especially like to thank Tom for the carpool to the event, Stephen for providing our subgroup proper detour directions via telephone and finally my subgroup colleagues(Carlos, Joe, Josh and Mike) for the great company. Thanks again and until the next time.

Thanks to Veloist'a for the slot, although i wish we had your company today. Thanks also to Matt, Gregg and Stephen. Nicely organized and led. This ride was definitely an affirmation of pain tolerance. All of the riders should feel good about finishing...the massive burritos.

Even on the Bailout I spent the last 15 miles in typical English drizzle. First 40 with Gambrill, Wolfsville and Raven Rock and the lumpy descent down to Thurmont was good though.

Wow you guys stopped for the vistas? I'm quite jealous!

Ooops make thar orange not yellow lines of the metro meaning I'd need to be on the 5:00 train to anywhere making this ride quite unlikely now.:-(

My plus one just cancelled, but I could not figure out how to change the RSVP... so there is at least one spot...

      April 27, 2013

    • FondoMotto

Jed you can havey my spot, unfortunately my bike broke 2 miles to the final last big climb. Got 54 miles and 6020 ft of unplanned pre-ride done though

      April 27, 2013

  • Josh R.

Uh, Haider, why do you have photos of this ride today? Are you doing a practice run or something?

    April 27, 2013

    • Matt

looks like Al & Haider thought the ride was today

      April 27, 2013

    • Haider H.

Yup... Al had a catastrophic failure on the LAST CLIMB...he won't make it to the ride Sunday... Im also out a mode of transport to the meeting point. :-(

    My plus one just cancelled,

Still looks full for tomorrow. Guess I'll have to find a way to torture myself! Have fun, kids. Don't do anything I wouldn't do on a bike.

    April 27, 2013

  • LDMay

    1. Guys who know me now, think I'm good for this?
    2. If yes, Matt, is there a slot or is it still full? It's hard to track the ins and outs.

    April 26, 2013

    • LDMay

I figure I can do anything...just maybe not as fast as you, Haider!

      April 26, 2013

    • Haider H.

fast is not always the way to go... especially hills... strong and steady would be the way to go. You're great at that! I get excited and hammer out on half of the first one and die up the rest.

If folks that are planning to drive to the start and have the ability to take other out to Frederick please post so those that may need rides can contact you. I know Haider was looking for a ride from Alexandria area.

A couple of questions for you who ha e completed this ride before:

    1. How long does the ride last? I heard it takes pretty much all day, but I'd like to have a better idea as I have family thing Sunday evening.

    2. Are there any stores along the route to refill water bottles and buy food?

    Thanks!

    2 · April 24, 2013

    • Charles V.

The planned rest stops will offer the opportunity to purchase food and water.

      1 · April 24, 2013

    • Matt

Andres yes as Charles mentioned each rest stop will have the chance to get water & food. There will be 3 total stops, roughly miles 20, 35 & 52. It will be long day in the saddle as it is almost 70 miles with lots of climbing. This typically pushes the mph avg down. Between ride time and rest stops I think in the past riders typically have rolled in to the finish between 3-4pm

      1 · April 25, 2013

  • Michael K.

I do have room for a person inside the car, but unfortunately no space for an additional bike.

    April 24, 2013

  • ChrisR

For those who can't get out to Frederick or can't get off the waiting list, how about 11500 feet of climbing in 108 miles in NoVa inside the Beltway and north of I-395? http://ridewithgps.com/routes/2360941

    April 16, 2013

    • Gregg

No problem Haider. We can make carpool arrangements for you and anybody else who needs it. Please contact Matt or myself ASAP if you need a lift.

      April 24, 2013

    • Haider H.

Chris about that route.... There are what feel like a million loops only in the first 12 miles!

There's no Tour de Carroll this year! So Matt's 'sado-masochist' ride (sorry, climbing event) is the de-luxe event of the day. I plan to ride the hilly stuff till Thurmont, then do the "Gruppetto-Bailout" ride the flat way back to Frederick. Takes in the first three brute climbs, misses out on the last two, does 54 miles total. Back from Thurmont by way of Hessong Bridge, Putman, Yellow Springs.
