Gran Fondo recently released the dates for the events:

Philly Fondo would be on Aug 14 while the inaguaral New York City Fondo will be on May 8, both dates land on a Sunday. While some of the folks here have done the Philadelpia's last year, some are now considering New York City Fondo in leu of New York City 5 Boro Ride(May 1st)and/or Philly.

While my experience with Fondo was very rewarding. Philly was doable since it had a Medio Fondo option vs. NYC only Gran Fondo. Philadephia have earned a new name Hilladelphia after the ride from ride bloggers <grin>

Although getting together in New York City Fondo will be more challenging due to logistic, I like to give a headsup that it can also more pricey. The reason Im posting this, since for those interested, early planning is essential to keep the cost reasonable.

New York Fondo 108 mile ride is over a 5,600 elevation. not does not have a metric option, but a bailout at the 80mile marker for those arriving before the last Bear Mountain climb after a certain time. The entry fee for each participant is $195. Included in the entry fee is a professionally designed cycling jersey, which is mandatory apparel for the event.

The GFNY expo is on Friday, May 6 and Saturday, May 7, 2011 in midtown Manhattan. The expo will have vendor booths from sponsors and exhibitors, where participants will be able to check out the latest gear, apparel, nutrition, and many other products and services. Each cyclist is required to personally pick up their registration packet from 10am-8pm on Friday or 8am-8pm on Saturday.

The Event will start at 630am at Mid-Town Manhattan and will cross the Washington Bridge and the rest will be at the New Jersey side, but finishing at NYC starting point. While Philly Fondo information is still quite sketching, more NYC Fondo info can be found at http://www.granfondon...

Hope it helps

I have also heard that there may be a Gran Fondo DC in early October 2011 (the announcement last October had a date of September 18, but that is the PPTC Back Roads Century date and understand the two ride sponsors are coordinating so there will be no conflict). Nothing more on route or anything.

Thanks Chris and Al,

This is good to know and I hope to participate in one of the events this year. There's another "local" Gran Fondo event scheduled for June 25th in Garrett County, MD(western MD). The route involves some of the most difficult and evil sections of the Savageman triathlon bike leg. More information can be viewed here.

How does a Gran Fondo differ from the local Sportive events such as Civil War or PPTC Back Roads? What makes it worth a $200 entry fee? Plus an additional $200 or more for the cost of the trip. As compared with $25-$50 for the regular events?

Not party pooping, but seeking knowledge.....

Hey Stephen,

Unlike the standard century rides, the gran fondos are officially timed similar to the marathon events. Include the fancy jerseys, finishing medals and the semi closed routes would explain the higher entry fees.

Now the UCI has jumped in on the act and created the UCI World Cycling Tour, a season long world championship that lumps together a bunch of Gran Fondos in various countries. News about it here: http://www.cyclingnew.... Apparently because McQuaid wants to take amateur cycling "to the next level". That could be a reason why GF New York is charging such eye-wateringly large entry fees.

Isn't the "next level" from amateur cycling Pro cycling? The UCI already has their greasy hands all over that pot.

interesting that the Grand Fondo website that use to show the DC event w/no date, now doesn't show a DC event at all but the other 4 Fondo city events have listed dates.
