MTB Night Ride - Lake Chabot

  • Lake Chabot Marina

Castro Valley, CA, Castro Valley, CA (map)

    37.715393 -122.102490

  • Meet in the marina parking lot - park there, or park on the street and bike in.
  • Join us on this Team Velo Girls MOUNTAIN BIKE ride … at NIGHT!

The fast, fun fire-road trails of Lake Chabot are perfect for a post-work ride.  Trails are mostly wide open and technically easy, making Lake Chabot the perfect spot for a night ride.  There is a good amount of climbing, however, with a rewarding scenic view of the southeast bay area city lights.

We have two loop options, depending on the group -- either the full 12 mile bike loop, which takes about 1.5 hours, or we could cut it short at the 8 mile loop, which is about one hour.

Come out with us to experience this popular park in the dark -- it's a whole new spin on mountain biking!  You will need lights and layered clothing as it gets very dark in some areas, and may become a bit cold as well.  We recommend a two light system: one headlamp and one bar light, although one good light should be fine.

Trails in the East Bay Regional Park District are open until 10 pm year-round.  The parking lot entrance at the marina is open until 6 pm.

    Hope to see you there!

Ok gals -- it's raining here and is supposed to be raining until Thursday so I'm going to go ahead and cancel this ride. We've got another one on the calendar in December, though! I'm ok with rain, cold, and dark … just not all three together in one ride!

Hi Kelli! We usually meet in the Marina, but then ride up the road to the Nike Classroom and then 10 hills - to the golf course, and around that way.. I don't know which direction that is. : ) I park on the street and ride into the Marina to meet Cristina. Although I think we may be rained out looking at the forecast!! BUMMER if it rains.

Howdy! Great questions - and answers from Julie! It would be counter-clockwise around the lake, starting at the marina parking lot. (I'm not a fan of climbing back up to the parking lot after a ride…) :) Rain Rain Rain… boo.

Is this ride ok for begginers? I have ridden Lake Chabot once but never @ night, Is it casual friendly pace? Thanks

I think our pace is pretty friendly... : ) The trails are good for beginners, but I have never done it at night myself, so I don't know how much the darkness will change the ride. Cristina can answer that one better!

Riding at night is different that's for sure! I'd say it's ok for a "beginner-plus" but not a "true beginner-beginner"…. if that makes sense? Basically if you felt completely comfortable riding there during the day and have some good lights, you should be fine for a night ride. :)

I would join you but the meeting regarding UCSC trails is that night.
