Guest Speaker: Richard Haynes of Atheist Nexus

Richard Haynes is a writer and public speaker, as well as the executive director of http://AtheistNexus.o..., the world's largest social networking site exclusively for nontheists.

"Brother Richard" was raised in a nonreligious home, but as a teenage runaway he had a "born again" experience. Almost immediately, he became an evangelist and personally led hundreds of individuals to Christianity. Richard went on to receive a Bachelor of Science in Biblical Studies, and became an associate minister in a 12,000 member mega-church.

In 1993, Richard and his wife Angela made the agonizing decision to leave their church, which was engulfed with scandal. Terrified and unemployed, they began their long and arduous journey to rationality and nontheism.

Richard is now secularly ordained and has dedicated himself to building nontheist communities, and encouraging others to "come out" of the atheist closet. His talk to Atheists United, "You Built It. We Came. Now What?" will address this subject.

"Brother Richard" lives with his family in Atlanta, Georgia. He writes a blog: LifeWithoutFaith.com,

Brian is a pro! great speaker, informative discussion. we need to have our oun monthly POD cast, THE VENTURA ATHEIST. So we could speak to the larger community. Mike

Richard needed to either speak louder or use a mike. Much too quiet for my 72 year old ears. And the chairs were arranged for discussion, but the format was lecture + Q&A, somewhat confusing. But I was pleased to find out about Brights, and I signed up when I got home. I suppose there may have been more give and take at Dargans, but I was just too damned tired to go.
  • David Whiteside
Lively discussion, if a bit disorganized. It could have been directed a bit more since Richard did have a message he wanted to get across.
