This will be a purely social dinner meeting. We'll be at the Hong Kong Inn in Ventura on Thompson Blvd. Come on over and enjoy some delightful conversation in good company! Although we are not all required to order food, everyone is encouraged to come hungry and eat something. See you there!

    Consider these seven people:
A: "I am 100% sure that God exists"
B: "I believe God exists, but I am not 100% sure"
C: "I suspect that God exists, but I can't say
    I believe it"
D: "I have no view whatever on whether or not
    God exists"
E: "I suspect that God does not exist, but I can't
    say I believe it"
F: "I believe that God does not exist, but I am not
    100% sure"
G: "I am 100% sure that God does not exist"
By my labeling system, A & B are theists, C, D, & E are agnostics, and E & F are atheists. How would those of you who define "an atheist" as "one who lacks belief in God" classify persons A-G?

That is the challenge, many do take it in that sense because they don't understand it, but in the interest of keeping burdens of proof where they belong, I feel it is important to insist that they not take it in that way.

Instead of trying to correct people's linguistic usage, maybe it would be easier to say "X lacks a belief that P" instead of "X does not believe that P." Very few, if any, would take "X lacks a belief that P" to mean "X believes that P is false." As for the so-called "burden of proof," I would say that whoever makes a public claim, no matter what its form may be (positive, negative, or whatever), has some obligation to try to support that claim if it is challenged or queried. Usually, theists and atheists have such a "burden of proof," but not those who merely say "I have no view on the matter" (whom I would call "agnostics").

Ugh, so sorry I missed this! Had to take a friend to the hospital. Definitely hope to make it out to more meetings soon!

p.s. The restaurant seemed to work out ok, and I like not having to walk up and down a flight of stairs just to pee.

Meeting was fun, but I would have liked to talk about world events sometime: ISIS, Gaza, police, kids on the border, etc. etc. Little kids were a real trip, parents obviously very involved and attentive, unconditional love, all the right moves, so neat to see. Food was good, even tho' I couldn't seem to get a refill on my icetea.

Hi James...we couldn't get it for August but we're back for September and I don't think we'll have any scheduling conflicts the rest of the year :-)

I request that the host picks a better place than Carrows to meet. I'm never eating there again after the pubes in the food a few weeks ago. Also they serve Bud products who employs people that seal our children. One place in the harbor that would help a local father, mom, family, and serves stuff that helps our community is the Harbor Cove Beach Cafe 1867 Spinnaker Dr Ventura, CA 93001 (805) 658-1639. We could contact them to open late for us. No music permit needed. Plenty of space for talking together and sharing ideas.
