Re: [vizsla-40] boarding and skin allergies?

Yep we have a 4  yr. old V, Ruby with allergies.  As a puppy it was SOOO MUCH worse where she had bumps and the bald spots.  We got a double wammy.  She got demodectic mange which we thought was allergies at first. She was first put on antiboitics which I now think further supressed her immune system making it worse if not causing it to happen.   Once we had that cleared the vet said we would probably still have to deal with allergies.  She looked like a mess!!!!  We took her to Central Tx Vet Speciality Hospital in S. Austin to a derm vet, put her on a limited ingredient diet (not cheap, but better that all the vet bills) and benadryll.  We chose this route rather than the allergy testing/ frequent shots etc.  It may come to that one day, but hopefully with the changes we've made it won't.  I also use flaxseed oil in her food every other day or so.  I tried fish oil, but she got bumps and when I switched to flaxseed they went away.  We do bath her weekly to help keep pollens and allergens off.  Trial and error!  That first year was ROUGH with all the vet bills etc., but now it's just check-ups. (knock on wood!!)   To some degree we just accept that she has allergies and there are times it's worse.  Our vet recently said she wasn't near as bad off as most allergy dogs he sees.  We of course are thankful!!

In respond to the skin bumps on your V, I have two V. I use to have a kennel of about 30 V.  When my V's would get skin bumps I would bathe them in Aveno oatmeal shampoo, it would put moisture back into the skin and would help with the itching.  You might also want to try puting bacon grease or and egg on there dog food. It helps with there coat.  V can have alot of allergy's you might want to keep an eye out for ringworm.  If the hair falls out around the bumps and creates a round circle more than likely its ringworm.  Treat it with an antibiotic cream such as Neosporin or Watkins petro-carbo salve.. Hope this info is helpful for you..

My vizslas usually have skin bump issues this time of year. They are growing out of it, tho. My 8 year old girl has a few bumps that are no big deal. It used to get bad, tho.

Ditto, my 6 year old boy also has a few bumps, but again, it's not bad. It used to be terrible, tho, where fur would fall out in the bump areas.

My vet would give him shots when it was really bad. It was for allergies. I think in my boy's case it is mold. Sure enough, mold levels are really high right now.  And they were also high at the height of his skin problems 2 years ago.

A vet can tell if it's mange by doing a skin scrape under the microscope. I had a boxer that battled that. My vizslas  battle allergies, however.

I would guess your pup is also battling allergies. Very likely mold. There's a good chance he will outgrow them over time. However in the meantime you may want to keep him inside on high mold days. Washing frequently (even with a cheaper shampoo) might be helpful too wash the allergens off his coat.

Best of luck in all this. I know it's frustrating seeing your dog break out in lumps. It will get better tho, and he likely will outgrow it.

> Hello all- I am hoping I can find someone to give us some advice. With a few summer vacations planned, we need to find a place to board our sweet 7 mo old Vizsla.  Of course- he requires his daily runs so I am hoping to find a place I can trust that won't just keep him in a cage all day and understands the needs of this breed.

For a while he had bumps all over him when I would take him to areas with tall grass (bull creek, turkey creek, Emma long).  Now the bumps are gone and have scabbed over and his hair is falling out. :(. It's mainly on his back.  I researched a bit online and found it might be a yeast allergy. Anyone else have this problem?  My vet gave me an antibiotic and expensive shampoo but I would like to find the source.
