INVITATION
The Chicago Sacred Harp Singers is pleased to announce an introductory shape-note singing workshop by Tim Eriksen on Tuesday, April 9th, from 7:30 pm to 9:30 pm. Doors open at 7:00 pm for socializing and light refreshments.  The focus of this workshop is on first time visitors with an interest in singing and new or newer Sacred Harp singers. However, experienced Sacred Harp singers are welcome to attend to renew their understanding of the basics and to meet newer singers.  No prior shape-note singing experience is necessary.

.

.

ABOUT THIS INTRODUCTORY SHAPE-NOTE WORKSHOP
For this introductory workshop, Tim Eriksen's teaching combines a lot of group singing, along with scholarly comments on the basic history, traditions, and techniques of shape-note singing. When people hear the term shape-note singing, they often think of Sacred Harp singing. Although Sacred Harp singing is currently the most widely practiced form of shape-note singing, other shape-note traditions are also practiced in Chicago and nationally. Tim's workshop will also directly apply to these traditions. For those who have read local messages about Missouri Harmony, Norumbega Harmony, or Shenandoah Harmony, Tim's workshop also applies to these song books.

ABOUT TIM ERIKSEN
As an internationally known musician, music ethnomusicologist, teacher, and long-standing member of the Sacred Harp community, Tim Eriksen is one of the best instructors that Sacred Harp singers can learn from. He is a modern day singing master who has helped the spread and growth of Sacred Harp singing through the teaching of shape-note singing workshops nationally and internationally. Several years ago, he also helped increase the popularity of Sacred Harp singing through the facilitation of Sacred Harp singing on the soundtrack for the movie "Cold Mountain," which starred Nicole Kidman and Jude Law. For these, and many, many more reasons, it is highly recommended to attend this workshop with Tim Eriksen. You can learn more about Tim Eriksen and listen to samples of his music at http://timeriksenmusic.com/ . In addition to learning from Tim at the workshop, you'll also have an opportunity to purchase his music after the workshop.

SHAPE-NOTE SINGING AND COMPOSING

Some in this group may be aware that composing songs in shape notes has been going on in America since the early 1800s. But, there are many modern day composers who are using shape-note as one of their primary methods for composing songs in four part harmonies. In fact, there are three Chicago composers who have their songs published in the Sacred Harp tunebook and other shape-note tunebooks. Also, a couple of new shape-note tunebooks have been published or republished in the last couple of years.

DETAILS ABOUT CHURCH ACCESSIBILITY AND PARKING
Please note that the church is handicapped accessible; however, the restrooms have not yet been upgraded to handicapped accessible. Street parking is available in the neighborhood. Metered parking is widely available just north of the church on Lawrence.  Participants are treated as church guests and can park in the Social Security Building parking lot at 2127 W Lawrence, just a block away. However, in order to park in the Social Security Building parking lot, participants must first stop by the church to pickup a guest pass to place on their dashboard. Please do not park in the Social Security Parking lot without a guest pass in your vehicle. Without such a guest pass, there could be a possibility of getting ticketed or towed.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
