Help at the Barbecue at Laura's Home, Women's Crisis Center

Barbecue at Laura's Home

Use a small part of your holiday weekend to help those less fortunate than you. Single Volunteers will be hosting a barbecue for the women and children of Laura’s Home, the City Mission home for homeless and abused women and children. C’mon out and have fun in the  fresh air while helping a very worthwhile community organization.

The Single Volunteers group is going to provide the hamburgers, hot dogs, buns, pop and chips.  Volunteers, in addition to running the grills are asked to bring a dessert dish to share with the residents and other volunteers. (And stay tuned for announcements about a surprise guest or two!) .We will also have a number of activities for the kids.

Let's start the kids activities at 3:30 and we'll plan on serving at 5:00. We should be done and gone by 7:00 and can discuss retiring to one of Kamms Corners fine establishments afterwards.

This promises to be a very rewarding experience.

Laura’s Home is easy to get to: it’s just west of Rocky River Drive just north of the airport.

Update:

Wow, I'm really impressed with the response to this event and never anticipated getting this many people.  Thank you.   I'm going to close this event to any more  RSVPs at this point though. I have a couple pf events planned to entertain the kids that we can help with in addition to the cooking duties, but I hope I have enough to do to keep everyone busy.

I'd like to sit down this weekend and make a quick list of assignments for the Laura's Home BBQ so everyone knows what to do when they get there. Before I do, is there anyone who would prefer to work with the kids on coloring or drawing? Paper airplanes? Grill? Blowing bubbles? ( No guarantee I can give you what you want, but I can try)

Thursday is OK but I'd have to come early, like 5:00 or so. I'm free all Wednesday night if that's easier.

Does anyone have an extra charcoal grill they might be able to bring? I just found out that the gas grill that Laura's Home has might not be working.

Thanks, JJ. I’ve got one charcoal grill but another would be a big help. I can stop by and throw it on the back of my pickup truck and get it back to you the day after the barbecue. How about if I stop by Friday the 24th to pick it up? Pat Percival

Pam: We are a very easy going group, very friendly, inclusive and easy to get involved with. No membership requirements. C'mon in and I'll introduce you to everyone.

Does anyone have any small amount of expertise with a yo-yo? Nothing fancy, just the basics. I'm thinking about getting a box of yo-yo's and offering lessons to the kids ( and adults, too, if they want).

This will be my second event with this group. First one was bagging lunches for the homeless at Tony K's.

I would love to attend but of course it depends on my work schedule. Right now I'm a 'yes'.
