Help build a house with Habitat for Humanity! (Saturday, 3/23)

Let's spend a weekend helping Habitat for Humanity build a house here in the Nashville area, while getting to know one another!

I posted an idea a couple days ago and got great response. So I called Habitat for Humanity, and they're planning on a group of us helping out the weekend of 3/23 and 3/24. Each day has a maximum of 25 people, as that's the maximum that can work on any one house at once.

You can sign up for just one day or both days. That's up to you. Days start at 7AM and end around 3:30PM. Please do not sign up unless you're sure you want to do it, as Habitat's timeframes are pretty tight and they depend on people following through on their word.

So, who's in?? This event is for Saturday, March 23rd. There is also one for Sunday, March 24th. Again, you can just do one day or make it a weekend.

If you're interested, please do the following:

1) RSVP here.
2) Email me at [masked] because I have a couple of things Habitat for Humanity Emailed me. Just some helpful tips.

Thank you for participating....it's going to be a lot of fun!!

First, thank you to everybody that came out. Very appreciated. I would like to express a bit of disappointment with the number of people who just flat out no-showed. About 1/3 of those who were still on the list to attend at the time of the event just didn't show up. Keep in mind that I've stated, more than once, people should not sign up if they aren't serious. Since this is a charity event under tight timeframes, I wanted to make it extremely clear to people that their attendance was important. Maybe I didn't do a good enough job of that, but if I post another one of these in the future I'll definitely do my best to impress upon people that it isn't acceptable to just not show up. Both days, the houses next to our house definitely had better attendance and it certainly is disheartening.

It went very well, I didn't get to talk as many of you as I would have liked to. If we do this again maybe we could do lunch different and have a chance to get to know everyone.

Enjoyed meeting everyone. Amazed at how much this small group accomplished in just 1 day. Wish it was sunny and warmer today. Thanks for organizing it.

    EVERYBODY:

I've received both directions to the site (in case you don't have GPS) and a map of the site showing where the parking lot is for volunteers and where our lot is. Also, there's a volunteer release form everybody MUST sign. If you'd like me to send these things to you, email me at [masked] today. I will bring extra volunteer release forms for those who don't see this. Thanks!!!

Here are your details for Saturday (VERY IMPORTANT TO READ):

The address is above. 512 Ewing Drive in Nashville. That's the entrance to the Habitat community. Once there, you'll see signs to the parking lot. Park your car and proceed to LOT 115. This is our site. If you get confused Habitat people will be there to help. Work starts at 7:30. Please arrive by then, but no earlier than 7:00.

Dress accordingly obviously. Avoid open toed shoes and dress for the weather. Wear clothes that you can stand to get dirty. Lunch is 30 minutes at 11:30 and is on site. So please pack a lunch or we can make plans to order lunch together to be delivered (subs, pizza, etc.). You may also want to bring a couple bottles of water for yourself or whatever beverage you like. It's very important everybody read this so I hope you see this. Please indicate below once you've read and understand this so I can plan for how many people may be unsure come build day. Thanks!!

Hi, I was wanting to bring my teenage son along to help out...not sure how much he can do, but would love for him to get the "experience"...is that okay?

    March 4, 2013

    • Chris E.

Habitat is okay with underage volunteers as long as they have a guardian, so it'll be fine.

      Awesome! Thanks...

I had a trip come up for work that will spill over to Saturday so I have to change my RSVP. I'm glad this will free up a spot for someone on the wait list though. I'll be in on the next one!

I am not going to be able to attend the Habitat build due to an unforseen conflict, but can't figure out how to take me off the list. Please advise!

Susan, when you go to the specific meetup, can you click on your RSVP? It should allow you to change it from Yes to No. Let me know, if not, I will figure it out.

Hey everybody, thanks for RSVP'ing. This one is almost full already (exploring the possibility of expanding it if need be). I did want to re-iterate something, though. Please only be RSVP'd if you know that, barring a last second emergency that you could plan for, that you'll be there. Why do I make this request??

Well, 25 people work on a house at a time. So, if I promise 25 people...we need to deliver 25 people. Simple as that. Even having 1 less than I say is going to look bad for this group. So it's really important, ESPECIALLY if you're one of the people who has said they are bringing people with them, to follow through. I'm sorry if I come across badly on this. I just really want us to put our best foot forward and have a full team.

    Thank you!

Susan, I'm sorry but I have no idea. I'm not even sure if they would accurately forecast that this far out.

Chris, thank you so much for putting this together and you explained very well how important it is that we have the correct number to be there on our specific day. Everyone, it is so exciting to see how many have signed up. I have Saddle Up! on Saturdays or I would be there as well. Hopefully I can get in on one of these while Saddle Up! is on break. It's such a worthwhile event. I could though swing by that morning to get some pics to post on the site and I would absolutely love to meet everyone.
