Based in New York's Chinatown/Lower East Side, the Chinese Progressive Association (CPA) works to promote social and economic justice for the Chinese community. CPA was founded to improve the community’s living and working conditions. We actively involve residents in the decision-making processes that affect our lives. We bring together people of diverse backgrounds to work toward our goals, and work with other communities to support equality and justice for all.
Volunteers play a crucial role at the Chinese Progressive Association. They come from all walks of life - community residents, working professionals, young people, parents, and grandparents. To learn more about how you can volunteer, please contact us at:[masked] or [masked]. Or you may complete and return the volunteer form (see below) to be added to our mailing list for volunteer opportunities.
*Current Volunteer Opportunities:
(1) Volunteer to Make our Voice and Vote Count:
This fall we will vote for our next mayor, city council member, borough president, pubic advocate, and comptroller. A record number of candidates are running this year. Join us at various events to register new voters, knock on doors, and phonebank to make sure our community votes! Do something in the neighborhood. Be part of a city-wide movement to make sure the Asian American voice is heard this year! Interested? Please send email to: [masked] or fill out the form here: http://cpanyc.weebly.com/volunteer.html(2) Teach English as a Second Language or Citizenship Class in Chinatown
For many new immigrants, learning English is a first step to becoming a full participant in American society. Help them take that first step by becoming a volunteer teacher or tutor in our English or Citizenship classes.
English classes help students improve their communication skills. Citizenship classes help students prepare for the U.S. citizenship test.
Volunteers work in a team to plan and teach the class. This fun and rewarding experience gives you a chance to make a difference in the lives of others. A strong desire to help and work with new immigrants is a must. Prior teaching experience is helpful. Bilingual skills are not required.
Please contact us if you have any questions or would like to join!
