Walk from Vancouver to Richmond - rivers and bridges

The weather is supposed to be nice on March 15th, so let's go for a walk!

Starting at the Skytrain station, we will cross the bicycle/pedestrian part of the Skytrain bridge over to Richmond, then walk past the River Rock Casino (where our first washroom break), and over the Dinsmore Bridge onto Sea Island (where the airport is).  Then we'll walk through the community of Burkeville and out the other side, walking back towards the water.  We'll cross back on Gilbert Road and walk along the Middle Arm Trail for a while, ultimately coming back to River Rock and back over the Skytrain bridge.

The URL for this route is http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=6228397

Notes:

• This will be a loop walk - we will be going back to the starting point.

• For those who like a shorter walk, there will be several places where you can catch a Skytrain back to the starting point (or wherever you want).

• This walk is almost totally flat, except for small rises to get onto bridges.

• The walk is 11.5 km if you go all the way back to the starting point.

• It will take us approximately 3 hours.

• Kids are welcome, but must be under supervision of an adult.

• Dogs are welcome, as long as they're on a clearly visible leash.

• There will be washroom breaks periodically.

• We will wait 15 minutes at the start for latecomers, but we will start as soon as everyone who has RSVP'ed "yes" is there (or at 11:00).

That was great... Good that we got out... With a bunch of fun adventuresome and friendly folks... And the weather held up for 3/4 of the walk... Lunch was great too.... And we were crazy enough to continue walking in the rain even after we had the option to jump onto the train...!? ~~~~ Thanks for organizing Laura.

Great walk! It was very nice to meet everyone! Rain didn't come down hard until the very end. So glad I made it out.

That was a real adventure and Laura your walks are always fun. Great group of people and mostly the rain held off or maybe it was because we were in Richmond!

I'm in NW Richmond, just about 2 miles west as the crow flies from the Canada line bridge... And it seems decent with no rain at present... So worth going ahead... Im only a 15 mimute drive for me... Unless I take the bus & train... Then it's almost 45'... Decisions decisions...!

I was hoping and praying for the longest, unfortunately the weather gods did not answer - at least not positively! Will unfortunately not attend today's walk which I had really been looking forward to.

I am sorry to say that the weather has turned against us. Nevertheless, the walk will NOT be cancelled. I really, really need a walk!

      Cool - in what language?

      March 13, 2014

    • Anita B.

Largely, if not entirely, in Hungarian. Some of my cousins have studied English, but I always get struck struggling with my Hungarian! My goddaughter will also be on the "call," I think. I haven't seen her since she was 11 months old, now 7. Apparently she's been learning a bit of English at school. Maybe she'll grace me with a demonstration :-D

Hi! I hope it's ok joining so late. I don't mind a little rain, hopefully it won't be a lot!

OK, all you fair-weather walkers - let's keep an eye on the weather forecast and hope for the best. If it does rain, we'll just do the walk with the folks who don't mind a little rain.

We'll be happy to see you as always, Al, despite your sense of humour. ;)

He he... Thanks Laura... Of course if it looks really wet I'll have to opt out... The windshield wipers on my glasses are too squeaky..!

We could use a walk too. Need to loose the 'winter weight', but don't like the rain. Looks will have to cancel again.

Sorry to hear you're not coming, Ricky & Pat, but the walk will NOT be cancelled.

Sorry, I can not attend the walk on Saturday, I was looking forward to meeting all of you. Next time.
    Have fun everyone.

Well, there's always a re-do of the Old New West walk :-D. Or Southlands along the Fraser. I'd also love to do a walk that does a more thorough exploration of the Riverview site. I was surprised at how extensive it is and a really beautiful property.

I'm okay with it. I'll just have to see how I'm doing by the weekend! Insomnia strikes again. Not sure I'll want to/be able to get up early for this.

      March 10, 2014

    • Laura B.

Ah - sorry to hear that. I know insomnia can really mess things up. I hope you'll be able to make it.

    Hi
I live in New Westminster and I was wondering what sky train station would be the closest one for me to meet you.

    March 10, 2014

    • Laura B.

I don't understand the question, Sabrina. Please use www.translink.ca to find out how to get to the meeting place by transit.

Greetings from Hualien. May I humbly note that the community on Sea Island is actually called Burkeville.

    March 8, 2014

You may! I'll change it - hope you're having fun over there.

The Lower Mainland Green Team has had to reschedule (twice -snow & now rain warning), so will also be on the 15th, cleaning broom and blackberries from Spanish Banks. Sorry I won't be walking.

    March 8, 2014

    • Laura B.

Sorry to hear that, Barbara. BTW, I hope your message doesn't confuse people - there is no rain warning for March 15th, and this event has nothing to do with the Lower Mainland Green Team. I had to read it twice before I understood why you had posted it.

    Hi Laura
We should consider the Dave S.walk. The Heritage Mtn.&Ioco walk he has already created a event page on February 22/ 2014. Many people signed up and mostly cancelled due to the snowfall warning. We could park for free at Rockey Point or take transit (we may have to start somewhat later to connect with the shuttle bus to the top of Heritage Mountain on Saturday?) First off if you park Its a short walk to catch the bus on St. John and Williams (the transfer point that takes us to part way to the top of Heritage Mtn ). or if people take transit just transfer on the same street at St. Johns.and Williams? Then on to the C27??(Dave has the buses and the route fully mapped out and timed) bus to the Mtn.We walk mostly down hill through beautiful forest across the sea -boardwalk and back toour buses or parking at Rockey Point even a washroom at the end. Please read Dave S event page Feb 22/2014.We have mountains, sea and exploration all together.
    Thank-you
    Len M

I can't lead that one, Len, because I don't know the area. Anyhow, I wanted to have mine a bit closer to home (Vancouver/Burnaby).
