Annual Cherry Blossom walk in Downtown and the West End

This is in conjunction with the Vancouver Cherry Blossom Festival. There will be tons of people. If you do not like crowds, this is not the walk for you. 'Akebono' cherries should be either in bloom, or just recently past bloom. Probably some other cultivars will be out as well. I should have help on this walk, so we can split up into a two or more groups. This event will happen rain or shine. We leave at 1pm and wait for no-one. We also will not make sure that you are still with the group. If you lose the group, walk around and look at trees. There will be lots of them and transit will always be nearby. I will try to have some maps.

Meet near Burrard Street under the cherry trees.

I did change the route map. It's not very different from the one I posted previously. If you want to use that, you'll still be fine. I changed some of the in bloom/not in bloom descriptions. Here it is: http://files.meetup.com/232720/2014CherryWalk%20Downtown%20and%20West%20End%20April%205%20with%20path.jpg

If you want it in colour, print your own. I will have black and white copies.

I enjoy beautiful flowers and nice people. Thank you Wendy, Laura and all others.

Thanks Wendy and Laura for leading this walk... Wow, What an enthusiastic bunch we all are... To get out in spite of the rain to celebrate the beginning of our spring marked by the blooming of the beautiful cherry and plum blossoms...! ~~~~~ (ps. I think I figured out where we probably lost you... Likely when we entered the Bayshore from the SE/Main entrance and exited via the West exit, chances are the group was still on the North-side/Waterfront-side... And we proceeded towards Stanley Park since we didn't see the group, and wondered if you had decided to outpace us... Glad we caught up with you... And that you were all okay)! ;-> ~~~~~ Thanks Wendy and Laura for leading this walk.

Laura, it was a much better experience for everyone having you and Dingren there.

      Thanks!

Great walk, Wendy. The rain kept the number of attendees down a bit, but the dedicated cherry blossom viewers/walkers were a good crew.

What a bunch of hardy, uncomplaining, cheery even, souls who turned out in the not at all warm rain to see lovely cherry blossoms. The trees co-operated, and thanks to Dingren and Laura, I thought it all went very smoothly. Actually, I liked that we were able to split up yet get back together again now and then.

Thought this was for 12:00pm...!!! ~~~~ They say the mind is the first thing to go sometimes... oh well... Maybe this makes up for all the times I was late...!!!??? ;~)

I have to remind myself that Vancouver is so beautiful partly because of the rain... Makes the trees and grass grow and makes everything nice and green... Wonder if it will make my hair grow if my head gets wet...!?

Thank you for organising this fantastic meetup. I now know the difference between a cherry blossom and a plum blossom! Hope to see you at a future meet up :-)

Changed my RSVP to a No but still may show. I am definitely a fair weather walker so it depends on how wet it is today. Would love to see the cherry blossoms so hope the rain holds off

    Hi

  • Louisa

Hi Wendy: I am so sorry to miss it, but I hope on April 20, there will be still some cherry blossoms around. Hope all of you have a wonderful walk!

    April 4, 2014

    • Wendy C.

There will be cherry blossoms, but not the same ones. That's why I'm waiting until April 14 to announce where the walk will be - to figure out what will be in bloom.

      April 4, 2014

  • Laura B.

Note: Although I'll be leading one of the groups, I will probably not be able to do the whole walk. At the point when I have to leave, though, I will make sure that my group hooks up with one of the other two groups.

Wendy thanks for organizing.... I'm looking forward to it, but might miss the group as I might run a little late.... Will try and catch up.... I'll just show your picture from last year wearing that beautiful hat to the tourists and ask if theyve spotted you... On another note, what time are we all going to do the "Cherry Blossom Dance"...? You know, The one that makes the wet stuff not fall from the sky...? (It would be nice if Laura can get us warmed up with her "Line Dance" lessons Perhaps)!? ;-)

It's going to rain, Al. Bring your brolly. And I won't be wearing my hat until the Easter Parade walk. But I'll have my awesome festival umbrella. Print the map.

      April 4, 2014

    • Al

Okay... Good advice... I think if I bring the brolly then it's probably not going to rain... What can I say, I'm an optimist...! ~~~ Thanks for the map.

    Hi,

Thanks Laura, you read me well and yes Wendy, the by-law is such that dogs must be kept on a leash to respect everyone's space. Sabrina, I look forward to meeting you and others, who joined the group to combine exercise and friendship.

    March 23, 2014

    • Laura B.

Sabrina and Claire, please save your conversation for when you actually meet. This space is for information about the walk.

    Hi,

At what pace do you walk, do we have time to talk to each other and enjoy our surrounding or will this be a brisk walk strictly meant for a workout? Do you keep the group together? I walk with my dog at a very good pace, but my primary goal to join a group is to have the opportunity to meet other people with similar interests.

    March 22, 2014

    • Wendy C.

I am going to say also that dogs must be on-leash.

      March 22, 2014

    • Laura B.

Um - I think she mean that she WANTed a slower-paced walk - at least that's how I read it. At any rate, whether that's what she wanted or not, that's what she's going to get. Wendy's walks are NOT fast paced.

For the meeting placeare the cherry trees by the burrard skytrain station.

    March 22, 2014

  • Sabrina H.

Yes I totally agree with Claire that it would be nice to get to know a few people in the group before we walk. I am also looking forward to making new friends with similar interests.

    March 22, 2014

  • Sabrina H.

Where exactly are we meeting at the Burrard station.
    Looking forward to this walk.
    Thank you for organizing it.

    March 18, 2014

    • Wendy C.

There will be 100 of us; I think you'll find us. But I'll add that in - near Burrard where the cherries are.
