Walk along the Arbutus corridor

It may be our last chance to see the beautiful and interesting community gardens along the railroad tracks of the Arbutus Corridor, so let's have a look and bid a fond farewell (?) before CP Rail destroys them.

We'll walk along the railroad tracks from Granville Island to Kerrisdale, then to Marpole and beyond, following the tracks to the Marine Drive Skytrain Station on the Canada Line.

• The walk is just over 11 km and mostly flat.

• This is NOT a round-trip walk.

• The URL for this route is http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=6398109

• Dogs are welcome, on leash only.

• There are jumping-off places near transit at several points along the route.

• The route will take us about three hours to complete.

• There will be washroom breaks at Quilchena Park and Riverview Park.

Track work suspended for talks between City and CP Rail. Aug 27. City website: City senior officials and CP Rail have agreed to meet to discuss the future of the Arbutus Corridor. While the two sides meet, CP Rail has agreed to suspend all track maintenance work along the Arbutus Corridor for the next two to three weeks.

    Hi Laura
Looking forward to this walk...it ends in my neighborhood. There are washrooms @ Riverfront park...

    August 10

    • Laura B.

No, she clearly meant the Riverfront Park, because she mentioned Romers Burger Bar, too.

      August 17

    • Sandy

Sounds like she was clearly confused!

    Fantastic! except for the wasps

I agree - I got a major sting on my thigh.

Great walk on a great day... Enjoyed the meal at Milltown... Fun place to watch the planes especially from the patio... Glad to see people enjoyed the place too. Thanks for organizing Laura.

Thanks for taking the lead in getting people to the pub, Al. Sorry I couldn't join you.

I was there yesterday around 2:30pm and walking through it until around 3pm, I did not see any no trespassing signs. Some gardeners were working there.

    August 16

    • Laura B.

Really? We saw LOTS of no trespassing signs, but we ignored them. And took pictures of some of them - you can see them in the pictures for this event.

      August 17

  • Laura B.

As I suspected, with the small detours and other changes we made (to avoid the wasps), the complete was walk 12 km, not 11.

Thanks to the hardy 8 souls who stuck with me 'til the end.

Thoroughly enjoyed myself. I was happy to meet new people and see familiar faces. And the blackberries at the end just topped off a perfect walk.

It was an interesting walk and it will be sad to see the gardens go. A number of us stopped for lunch at a pub, before the end of the walk.

Thanks, Laura, for a very interesting walk. It was fascinating to hear the resident farmers reminiscing. And bittersweet to witness the end of an era.

I got mixed up on the start time and missed a good walk. Oh silly me!

    August 16

    • Laura B.

Sorry to hear that, Ruth - it was in fact a good walk.

      August 16

  • Lyn P.

Thanks Laura for another great walk. It's nice to know that at least part of those beautiful gardens will be saved!

Came back way too late from Victoria due to unexpected meeting & a very LOOONG & stressful day. Just couldn't drag myself out of bed at the necessary time. Did lots of walking in Victoria, though, so my feet will thank me for the break.

Sorry for the late cancellation, Laura. Having issues this morning. Hope the corridor isn't looking too tragic!

    • Laura B.

      Ah - we'll miss you - hope everything's OK.

Hi Laura: Okay, good news, the gardens are still there because I went this afternoon. You may have seen the evening news by now that CP did some clean-up. Enjoy it tomorrow with your group! I won't be there.

    August 15

    • Teri D

One of the eve news reports said that work would continue thru the weekend but since they've started at the south end we should be ok 'til the end bit.

      August 15

    • Laura B.

We'll be fine no matter what. If any areas are impassable because they're tearing them up, we'll just walk around.

      August 15

  • Alice

    Sorry Laura, family gathering.

    August 15

  • Werner M.

Well that didn't take long did it? I just RSVP's maybe ten minutes ago, and I already have to cancel. Had an errand today but it turns out they close at 12:30 and it can't wait till Monday so I have to go tomorrow. Sorry to miss this one! Somebody please take some nice pics for me!

    August 15

    • Laura B.

Can you go in the morning and meet us part way?

      August 15

    • Werner M.

Remains to be seen. Some things are up in the air. I should know by late afternoon.

Hi Laura: No good news, CP is ploughing the Community Gardens (it was in the news this morning.) So, I am going to try to meet you (I guess you are on route via Maple) @ Maple & 7th where close to the garden around 11:15 or so? Or you may have a better idea where about and the time? I just want to take some photos.

    August 15

    • Laura B.

Yes - I've seen the news, too; however, there doesn't seem to be any way to know how much is left without going to see it. Don't forget that it's only those gardens that are directly on the CP Rail property that are affected - the rest will still be able to be viewed. As for the time, we'll be starting to walk at 11:00, and we'll be walking along the railroad tracks, or as close to them as we can get. It should take us about 10 minutes to get to Maple & 7th.

      August 15

  • Teri D

not sure I can get to GI before 11, but may be able to meet y'all @ B'way/Arbutus - what's your best guess for an ETA there ?

    August 14

    • Laura B.

11:15? 11:30? It shouldn't take us very long to get there from the start.

      August 14

  • Sandy

Oops I have tix for Bard on the Beach...I was looking forward to the walk.

    August 14

    • Laura B.

Oh - sorry we won't see you, then.

      August 14

  • Brian the V.

They've already put up no trespassing signs... so I'm assuming you could get a fine, but probably won't... I want to do this walk myself, but I might be busy. :(

    August 13

    • Laura B.

Thanks, Brian. We'll take our chances - there's strength in numbers.

      August 13

    • Liz N

Yeah - Laura's favourite pastime (trespassing!)

I have written the walk down for Sat August 16th. I will be bringing my dog that is muzzled and leashed. Not a biter, but fearsome of people - only if people try to stroke him!

    August 11

    • Laura B.

That sounds fine - please let people know at the start of the walk.

      August 11

sounds a great idea, Laura.. I'm back and will really try to make it.. I will let you know... Jay

Something like that but not a hobbit house (I think.) I (or we) did not go inside. I did try to look up the pictures of that walk but have not found the folder yet. Will let you know if I found it.

    August 8

    • Laura B.

No need - I'm pretty sure it's right on the route, so we should run right into it.

  • Louisa

Hi Laura: I won't leave it for long, may be end of Aug while the Summer flowers are still there. You had this walk some 3 years ago but did not stop at the community gardens, but stopped at 6 & Maple an interesting house and I have been saying to go again to visit that house garden. Have a fun time!

    August 7

    • Laura B.

What a memory you have! I hope we find that interesting house again. Was it the little garden shed that looked like a hobbit house?

      August 8

  • Louisa

Hi Laura: I can't make it Aug. 16! I have been thinking the same and want to go over take some pictures before it is no more. Have a wonderful walk!

    August 7

    • Laura B.

Hi Louisa - I’m so sorry you can’t join us - we haven’t done this walk in a long time, and I was thinking we’d better hurry up and do it before it's too late!
