~6 mile out & back hike with ~1200' gain from Hwy 38 to Morton Peak near Mentone.
Payoffs include: panoramic views of the San Bernardino mountains, the Yucaipa Ridge, and the valleys around, and a nice conditioning workout.
Due to distance, lack of cover, and elevation, this hike is rated: Moderate.
We will meet at 445p and begin hiking at 455.
An Adventure Pass is required to park at the parking area across the street if you can't get parking at the bottom of the trail. They are $5 for the day / $30 for a year. Click here to locate vendors near you: http://www.fs.usda.gov/detailfull/r5/passes-permits/recreation/?cid=stelprdb5181410&width=full
With hike and breaks, we should be back to the cars around 815p. Make sure you bring a headlamp! Optional stop at Mill Creek afterwards.
Hiking best practice is to bring the 10 essentials. I will, and I recommend you do too. REI has a list here: http://www.rei.com/expertadvice/articles/ten+essentials.html I like to keep my pack as light as possible. I use this packing list for my day hike pack, which weighs very little even with food and water: http://blackwoodspress.com/blog/10910/ultralight-day-hiking-pack-list/
At the very least, you MUST bring: 1.5L water, snacks, sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat. Trekking poles are recommended. There is NO cover on this trail; be prepared.
Carpools are encouraged; use the comment section to coordinate rides & passes. If you aren't driving, please donate a few bucks to your driver's gas fund or provide the Adventure Pass.
