Next time you eat potatoes or enjoy some McDonalds fries, remember our walk today. The Boys Parental School, located on Mercer Island, changed its name to Luther Burbank School in 1931. The school remained open until 1966 and in 1969, King County purchased the land and converted it into Luther Burbank Park. The city purchased it in 2003. The incredible Luther Burbank story began, after he received an inheritance upon his father's death, which he used to buy a 17 acre plot in Massachusetts. On this land, he developed the Burbank potato. He sold the rights to the Burbank potato for $150 and used the money to travel to Santa Rosa, California, in 1875. A variety of the Burbank potato with russetted skin was selected and named Russet Burbank potato. The Russet Burbank potato is the most widely cultivated potato in the US and a large percentage of McDonald's french fries are made from this variety. Mr. Burbank went on to become a world famous horticulturist - out of space!!!!
