Four Mile Walk, Picnic & Lighthouse Tour in Sandy Hook, NJ

Here comes another awesome walk!

On Sunday, April 15th at 11:30 A.M. Daryl & I invite you to join us for a fascinating and scenic four mile walk in Sandy Hook's Gateway National Park, followed by a picnic and lighthouse tour (for those who would like to linger!) From a baseball field where the Yankees played once in 1943, to 'Officers Row' and WWII gun batteries, the area is rich in history.

We will start by walking along the 'west coast' of the peninsula looking out to Sandy Hook Bay, then head inland to paths winding through natural and protected settings for our local birds and plant life. Next we will walk east out onto the Atlantic Ocean beach to take in the northern views of Staten Island, Brooklyn and Rockaway as well as cargo ships and liners crossing the sea. Finally we will pass the Sandy Hook Lighthouse, which, built in 1764, is the oldest existing lighthouse in the U.S.A! It is another of our area's national treasures. : )

We will meet you at Guardian Park, a perfect gathering and picnic location. Be sure to bring a thermos and/or lunch basket/cooler for your enjoyment after the walk. The lighthouse opens at 1:00 P.M. for tours, so whoever would like to are welcome to join us for this activity following lunch!

To find Guardian Park, start clocking your car's mileage after passing through the gates of Sandy Hook. After approximately four miles you will see a split in the road where Magruder Drive branches to the right off of Hartshore Drive. (You will see a row of old yellow and green houses in the distance.) Bear to the right and take the first driveway on your left for the parking lot of the Guardian Park picnic area. I've marked the map here with an arrow to show the split in the road.

We are truly looking forward to sharing this walk and event with all of you great people. It is beautiful and educational and FUN! See you then and as always, we look forward to seeing old friends and making new ones...

Daryl & Elle

**In the event of rain or fog we will cancel this event one hour before (10:30 a.m.) We will post 'Canceled' on this page as well as send an email notification to all who have signed up to attend. But this rarely happens; we have been very fortunate. So if you have any doubts, be sure to check your emails!**

Sandy Hook was great! So nice to get together with some regulars, some newbies, and a couple of "shore walker classics" - Janice and Bob. Loved the walk, beach "scenery", picnic, History House, and Lighthouse tours. Thank you Elle and Daryl for organizing a terrific outing.

I cannot believe I have lived here all my life & have never been that far into sandy hook. Certainly got a history lesson today! lol Enjoyed our climb to the top of the lighthouse. Those of us who stayed to tour the light house walked between 6 & 6.75 miles, depending upon whether you walked to the beach front. Could not have asked for a better day weather wise!!!

    Hi everyone,
From what Daryl and I see on the radar and read in reports from Sandy Hook, the walk is on! It's warm out and the weather seems to be clearing. Remember to dress in layers and bring water if you think you'll need some. Also it might be good to throw a blanket or beach chair in the trunk in case we run out of seating for our picnic. See you soon! ~Elle : )

I think there is a beach grass replenishment project going on in the morning so the park may be a bit crowded.

    Hey everyone,
It looks like we'll have a large group for this event! I suggest you pop a lawn chair or blanket in your car in case we run out of picnic table space. Also, tours of the lighthouse are limited to groups of eight and sign-ups begin the minute their doors open at 1:00 P.M. The tour guide wants us to know there are 95 steps in a spiral staircase, and a nine rung ladder at the top to climb into the lens!
My legs gets a little wobbly at heights, but I'm going to try it for the view!
