Ataturk Memorial Walk

The Ataturk Memorial Park is a great off-leash area that Lily and I go to almost every day. It would be great if some of you would like to join us! This is a great option to be combined with the Lyall Beach meeting at 4, for everyone who would like to get a bit of a walk in before the playtime at the beach. The Evans Bay play area meet up will still be on at the same time, so people have the choice of doing either, and then both groups can meet at the beach afterwards.

If we want to do a slightly longer option, we can add the Rabbit Walkway to the beginning of the Ataturk outing, but we can decide that on the day. This would mean backtracking about 200m on the road to Birkhall Grove (see map above). This would add another 20min or so to the walk (the Ataturk loop walk itself takes about 30min, this is without stopping/playtime). From the Rabbit Walkway  there are great views over the airport/Lyall Bay, and the Ataturk Loop Walk offers sweeping views of the Harbour Entrance and Cook Strait. Both walks are away from roads and are off leash areas.

Either way, we will meet at the gravel car park area at the end of Bowes Cres, Strathmore (see marker in map). Looking forward to sharing our favourite walk with you!

Both Lily and I really enjoyed today, thanks everyone for coming! It was great to do it in three parts, so everyone could do as much as they liked. After the Ataturk Loop a few of us headed on to the Rabbit walkway and enjoyed some fabulous views towards the airport/Lyall Bay. Seeing the Burger Caravan down there was too much for some of us, so a handful ended up heading down there and enjoyed dinner at the beach...great way to finish this fabulous day!

Thanks for organising it Barbara - was a fab walk, and great to have the flexibility to do the shorter/longer option to suit everyone. Great burger stop afterwards, and I can confirm that we have 2 tired weimaraners who have had 3.5 hours of exercise today, yay!

Thanks, as always, too to Tania for taking photos - and to anyone else who grabbed some snaps - it's so nice to have the photos to look at afterwards, and apologies from me and Doug who are usually far too distracted by our terrible two and their mischievous pursuits to remember to get our phones/camera out!

What a fabulous walk in a beautiful location! It was lovely to have such a tremendous group along today - great to welcome some new members, to catch up with some familiar faces, and to see so many wagging tails. :-) A huge thank you to Barbara and Lily for organising & hosting this event and sharing one of their very favourite walks with us!

Looks like a great day for our walk today :). Just wanted to mention that for those who would like to do the Rabbit walk as well as the Ataturk Walk it would be a good idea to bring walking shoes with a good tread, as some parts are steep and sandy/muddy (all downhill ;-). The Ataturk walk is part sealed, part gravel. See you soon!

Sounds great Barbara - looking forward to it! :-)

We'll be in our walking boots and ready for the Rabbit Walk as well as the monument - maybe in some kind of figure of 8 loop which would give us 2 walks up the dog exercise area hill?!

Can someone tell me about the small dogs social please..

    October 20, 2013

  • Lyndsay

Hi Marita, until the lady who runs it can answer all I know is the first Sunday of each month they meet at Petone esplanade, at the Mobil Petrol station end just behind the model railway. You cannot miss them as there are about 30 small dogs there! Then they/we walk to some open grassy areas where they can run around and also walk on the beach. I believe they have other regular meetings in the Hutt but I dont have the info for these. I think the organiser puts notices in local papers and around the local area.

ohhh err thats the same day and time as the monthly small dogs social in Petone :(

Yes I know! I dont know which to go to, so much choice!!

Hi, I agree with Tania. It is great that there are different events available and happy to promote both through the Small Dog Social facebook. I only checked in here because the Ataturk is one of my favourite Wellington walks and to see if it would be on again some time.

Hi Barbara, That's my Birthday. I will leave myself on for now but i am hoping my partner will surprise me with a day out of town. :-)

anyway - have a fabulous day! happy to be your back-up activity for the day :)

      1 · October 8, 2013

And if they don't surprise you, come along and we'll make sure that the Walkies mob celebrate with you :)

If all the RSVPs turn out to be big, bouncy dogs, we should definitely start with the Rabbit Walkway :) If there's a mixture of athleticism (of both dogs and owners!), then those who don't want to do the extra bit could wander down the Woof Ruff path and meet the rest of us at the bottom car park and we can all walk/play back up to the start point together!

    • Barbara P.

good suggestion Steph. We'll just see what everyone thinks on the day. If we decide to do the rabbit walkway, I'd recommend bringing shoes with a good grippy sole, as some parts are a bit steep (downhill). great little bush walk though!
